The M.I.T. mathematician, Norbert Wiener (1894-1964), well known for his pioneering work in communication theory, contributed substantially to the mathematics of harmonic analysis, Fourier transforms, and Tauberian theorems. The present publication, Wiener's second monograph - preceded by 'The Fourier integral and certain of its applications', 1933 - treats Fourier transforms in collaboration with his student R.E. Paley (1907-33), who was killed in a skiing accident while a Rockefeller Fellow at M.I.T.
