Zustand: A Very Good Copy. Middle-class women were not expected to write professionally in Victorian / Edwardian times. Diaries however gave these ladies an opportunity to express themselves in print. This fine example is probably part of a series of her output. Diaries of this era were more commonly done by the Upper classes, describing vacation trips and scenery, clippings, chromo litho flora printing and cards, poetry. Full length day to working day diaries are much less common, even rare. 24mo., 13.5cm, circa 200 pages, in manuscript, black ink closely written, fairly legible, in full maroon limp fine grain calf, typical diary type binding of the day, french marbled endpapers and edges, some slight edge wear, rear inner paper over the hinge is broken, (this is common with diaries as they were opened flat and pressed down for writing in), the text is clean and sound ~ all considered.

Hardcover. Narrow 8vo. (23.5cm x 10cm), 252p., 5p.index, handwritten entries (pencil & ink), bound in half dark brown sheep and brown cloth boards, marbled endpapers, inner linen hinges, very good, very rare (cgc) A lumber stock register. I have never had or seem any similar logging account manuscript books. - The index indicates lumber types and species: deals, red pine, spruce, tamarack, 1st and 2nd stumps, siding, good shorts, mill clulls, box siding, etc. An interesting record of types and sizes of wood common in the 1890's. Believed to be associated with the Ottawa Valley lumbering trade. - One entry mentions Perkins which we believe would be Perkins, P.Q., just north of Wakefield, still known for lumber.

Zustand: Very Good. The photos were probably taken by a family member. The photos and leaves are captioned but only one gives a hint to the family: "The Ryans Gang, Wakefield". Around 110 photos are included, most mounted but a few are loose. A unique item. Oblong 4to. album: 19 x 28 cm, 48 leaves with only 21 with photos attached, about 110 black & white photos with hand-written captions, leather bindings with gilt title"Photographs", tied with a lace, some fading to some photos. The album contais 12 photos from the 1932 Olympics at Lake Placid along with a booklet about the Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic Bob-run, Captions include "Ottawa Gang at 1932 Olympics Lake Placid"; "Can & US Hockey Teams"; Belgian 2-man Bobsled"; "President Roosevelt takes the salute, opening day at Olymics". The latter photo has "Me" and an arrow in ink. The athletes are identified as "John Pringle Taylor" and "J.F.C.". The former is probably the athlete who took part in cross-country skiing, while other might be the skier, John Currie. The rest of the alb um consists of "the gang" at Hogs Back (Ottawa), at Hurds Lake, on board the Duchess of Bedford, visiting Quebec, attending formal weddings, and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth's visit in Ottawa.
