Solid text block, faint toning to endpapers, light rubbing to corners and spine, a near fine example. Complete with 19 full-page plates, including frontispiece. In publisher's dust jacket, faint soiling to front and rear panels, slight chipping to corners and spine, toning to spine, one short closed tear to rear panel, a very good example. This biography, written by the subject's daughter, Sophie Radford De Meissner, outlines the naval achievements of Rear Admiral William Radford (1809-1890). Radford served during the Mexican-American War and fought for the Union in the Civil War despite being born in Virginia.

Craighead, Printer, Stereotyper, and Electrotyper, as stated on the copyright page. Light wear to margins, internally clean. (Sabin 91061) (Not found in Nevins, Dornbusch) Exceptionally scarce, the only known signed copy, with nine known institutional copies. This copy is signed by the author on the title page. This work was first published in the New York World on Wednesday, July 23, 1861, two days after the Battle of Bull Run, the first major battle of the Civil War. (Provenance: Originally sold by Americana expert Charles P. Everitt, on February 16, 1920. Provenance noted in pencil on detached pastedown from another book.). Signed.

Stated "first edition" on copyright page. Light dust along text block, internally clean. In the publisher's dust jacket, $2.00 on front flap, shallow chipping at spine, illustrations on panels. Inscribed by Katherine Van Akin Gates on the half title: "For Frannie and Ralph - With sincere appreciation of a fine and enduring friendship - hospitality expressed! Katherine Van Akin Gates / June 1941." Mrs. Ramabai Ranade (1862-1924) was an influential social reformer and advocate for women's rights in pre-independence India. She was the founder of the Seva Sudan Society, one of the first organizations to offer educational, medical and social services to women in India. This autobiography, titled "Amchya Ayushyatil Kahi Athavani" in her native language of Marathi, was translated by Katherine Van Akin Gates in 1938. This translation is the only known copy to appear on the public market and one of a handful of copies held in public institutions. Signed.

(illustrator). Reissue. Octavo, [two volumes], iv, 156pp; iv, 148pp; iv, 140pp. Publisher's original green cloth, elaborately stamped in blind with gilt bird's nest stamped on front covers. Title in gilt on spines with floral embellishments. Yellow endpapers. Complete with 225 hand-colored engravings with tissue guards, bright colors, occasional mild foxing. Corners and board edges lightly bumped. Spine ends and edges lightly rubbed with minor loss of cloth. Mild intermittent foxing to text pages, some foxing to edge of text blocks, each volume has a few unopened leaves along top edge, touch of shelf wear to covers. Front endpapers of each volume cracked, but hinges secure. Armorial bookplate of Joseph Jones on front pastedowns. (Fine Bird Books, 1990 p. 125) (Wood 472) (Mullens & Swann p. 417) (Zimmer p. 443) An attractive example. Rev. Francis O. Morris (1810-1893) was known for his popular writings on natural history, particularly birds and insects. Morris' A Natural History of the Nests and Eggs of British Birds was first published in 1853-1856 by Groombridge and Sons of London and printed by noted engraver Benjamin Fawcett. This set is a reissue of the first edition, published and printed by the same duo in 1865-1866. The illustrations are hand-colored wood engravings. Mullens & Swann describe the first edition of Nest and Eggs as containing 223 plates, less nine plates which were not published. A reissue from 1866-1867 found in Zimmer contains 225 plates, having the addition of plates XL and XLII which were two of the nine omitted from the original edition. This 1865-1866 reissue has the two additional plates noted in Zimmer, plus an insert-slip at page 21 noting the omission of plates XI, LV, LVI, LX, LXIX, XCIV and CXIX since "properly identified specimens have not been procurable." The second edition of this work was published by Bell and Daldy of London in 1870.

Price "Fifty Cents" listed on front cover, tape remnant on front cover, wear to spine. BAL's printing A and wrapper 1, including misnumbered page "x" with "vi" in Preface, copyright information in four lines, and three titles listed under "Library of American Books" on rear cover. (BAL 7597) (Moebs 80) In custom brown cloth clamshell with title printed on paper label. Signed by J.H. Williams on front cover. Joseph H. Williams (1814-1896) served in the State legislature of Maine as both a Senator and House Representative, and he was also Governor of Maine for one year. Williams was a relative of the author of this work, Horatio Bridge (1806-1893). Bridge, a U.S. Navy officer, served aboard the sloop-of-war USS Saratoga off the west coast of Africa from 1843-1844. The USS Saratoga was stationed there to protect American citizens and suppress the slave trade. According to correspondence, Bridge's roommate at Bowdoin College, Nathaniel Hawthorne, allegedly inspired Bridge to keep a journal of his travels, which Hawthorne helped edit and compile into the Journal of an African Cruiser. Signed.
