As noted in Printing and the Mind of Man, it is "one of the earliest, clearest, and most absolute theoretical expositions" of doctrines later associated with philosophical anarchism and socialism. London: Apud Richardum Tottellum, 1569. First edition of "the crown and flower of English medieval jurisprudence," the first genuinely systematic treatise on English common law. Folio (11 1/4" x 7 3/4"; 28.6 x 19.7 cm). [xvi], 172, 175-444 leaves (complete despite the gap in foliation, which is a known printing variant common to all copies). Title page features the imprint "Cum priuilegio" at the foot. Bound in nineteenth-century diced calf, boards decorated with gilt rules, the spine featuring gilt fillets, ornaments, and a gilt-lettered title. Board edges decorated with gilt rules, leading to gilt inside rules and marbled endpapers; ribbon marker retained. Light rubbing to the boards, with a faint dampstain evident on the front board, and moderate rubbing to the extremities. The front joint is starting at the head, the rear joint is cracked, and the corners are bumped and somewhat worn. The interior is adorned with attractive, large woodcut decorated initials. Text exhibits light toning, somewhat heavier in isolated places, alongside light foxing and occasional finger smudges; some fading affects the text of leaves 1 and 2. Affixed to the front pastedown is the armorial bookplate of Arthur Henry Holland-Hibbert, 3rd Viscount Knutsford (1855-1935) of Munden House, Hertfordshire, inscribed "Ex Libris Munden." Lord Knutsford was a dedicated public servant who served with distinction as both a Justice of the Peace and High Sheriff of Hertfordshire. The custom bookplate was finely engraved by Sir Henry Badeley (Baron Badeley), a celebrated artist, Clerk of the Parliaments, and one of the preeminent bookplate designers of his era, known for executing custom plates for prestigious institutions such as the House of Lords Library. Written between 1250 and 1256, De Legibus et Consuetudinibus Angliae ("On the Laws and Customs of England") stands alongside Glanvill as the twin peak of early English legal literature.
