Sheep binding richly decorated in gilt with arms of Marchese Alfredo Dusmet within triple ornamental borders; backstrip gilt. A loyal address by the Latin archbishop of Rhodes, Marcus Montanus, delivered in Rome on 10th of March 1493 in the presence of the recently elected Borgia Pope Alexander VI. Representing the knights of Rhodes, Montanus declares their allegiance to the Supreme Pontiff in order to obtain his aid, heighten the profile of the Order and inspire the new pope to support their cause. Among other orators present are named the fellow Rhodian knights, Fra Peter Stolz [von Beckelnhain], the Order's Grand Bailiff (1498-1503) and Fra Berengario Santii, Prior of Barospe, in Navarre. After his conquest of Constantinople in 1453, Mehmet II had already made Rhodes a priority target, as the Knights were successfully harrassing Muslim shipping. Pope Sixtus IV (1471-84) had supported the Order by issuing a printed indulgence to raise funds for the defence of the island during the summer of 1480 when an attempted Ottoman invasion was successfully repelled. However, it was only in 1522 that Suleiman the Magnificent finally managed to force the island's surrender after a long siege by his grand armada. The Knights were allowed to retire to Malta, their final headquarters. Este conjunto de gravuras apresenta uma enorme qualidade gráfica, excepto as gravuras referidas, sendo esta possivelmente a segunda estampagem dos mesmos originais calcográficos. A obra não tem página de rosto e, provavelmente, cada placa devia ser vendida como um "registo", ou ícone, do santo. A primeira placa é um frontispício sobre o santo, mas não tem dados tipográficos. Existem duas edições. A edição original é de Nápoles, 1622, e a 2ª edição de Nápoles, 1627. Obra composta por 64 gravuras de Alessandro Baratta, com rimas de Don Orazio Nardino Cosentino. Este livro, publicado em 1622 e recentemente descoberto e comentado por Concetta Bevilacqua, contém 64 gravuras de página inteira reproduzindo cenas da Vida e Milagres de São Francisco de Paula. A obra foi encomenda ao mestre de gravador Alessandro Baratta, nascido em 1583 e que viveu em Nápoles onde era o proprietário de um grande estúdio. Todas as gravuras se encontram acompanhadas de versos explicativos de Don Orazio Nardino. Os comentários que acompanham as belas imagens do século XVII foram feitos numa linguagem muito simplificada para permitir que todos possam aprender mais sobre a vida e os milagres do grande milagreiro da Calabria. The work has no title page and each engraving was probably sold as a "souvenir" or icon of the saint. The first plate is a frontispiece about the saint, but has no typographical data. There are two editions. The original edition is from Naples, 1622, and the 2nd edition from Naples, 1627.
