Softcover. Zustand: Near Fine. AUSTRALIANA Aboriginal Military Biography WHITEWASH is a true story of breathtaking scope that follows a family's journey across several centuries, from First Peoples genocide and the transatlantic slave trade to flight and freedom in a new land, punctuated by some of the most significant conflicts… in human history. It is also the story of race, identity and the whitewashing of Black and Indigenous history.George 'Bernie' Showery was born in Sydney, Australia, in the years prior to Federation. Abandoned by his African-American father when he was just three years old, an eccentric father figure would later introduce him to carefree days at Freshwater Beach. It was here, in the summer of 1914-15, that Duke Kahanamoku would demonstrate his graceful ability to walk on water, with the ocean serving as both a stage and a supreme metaphor for change.Soon after, Bernie Showery would be called away to fight for the British Empire, serving in the Middle East with the legendary Australian Light Horse and the Imperial Camel Corps. Fighting alongside Lawrence of Arabia, he would witness the great cavalry charge at Beersheba, the fall of Damascus, and the manoeuvring behind the British carve-up of Palestine.xxxiv, 460 pages : illustrations, maps, portraits, genealogical tables ; 24 cm First Edition #040423Includes bibliographical references (pages 418-455). A collection of approximately 100 original vintage prints (b/w and colour) spanning the period from the late 1950s to the early 2000s, in various formats up to 250 x 200 mm, plus several later copy prints, all unmounted in individual archival sleeves, and housed in an archival album; the sleeves have briefly captioned labels aff…ixed (written by Manuela Furci of the Rennie Ellis Archive) supplying basic information identifying the photographer and either a location or context, and usually also giving an approximate date; the constant subject in all of these photographs is Rennie Ellis himself, and the majority of the collection comprises a kaleidoscopic mix of private and candid shots of Rennie at work and at play, taken by Rennie (self-portraits) and his circle of friends (often using Rennie's own camera), all talented photographers in their own right and including (most prominently) Robert Ashton, William Yang, Carol Jerrems, Ian Dodd, John Ogden, Ian Macrae, and Peter Milne; the balance of the collection is made up of a smaller number of more formal posed portraits; the condition of the prints is generally very good, with only a few exhibiting some surface damage, cropping marks or other minor blemishes. Some key images in the archive: Carol Jerrems (attributed, using Robert Ashton's camera).
