Complete suite of twelve copperplate photogravures, printed in an edition of 5; 290 x 390 mm (plate size), 395 x 485 mm (sheet size); all titled and dated 2013 by the artist lower left, and signed by the artist lower right in 2023; very fine, loosely housed in a custom handmade protecti…ve box. Acclaimed photographer Robert Ashton's series ofcopperplate photogravures were produced from his own photographs taken during his visit to Ladakh in 2013. 'When photographer Robert Ashton arrived in the barren plateaus of India's northern Ladakh region, the snow had just melted, leaving the markings of rivulets in the scree slopes. The atmosphere was so clear the distant blue mountains were crisp and vivid. He wasn't there only to photograph the remarkable landscape; the disputed border zone between India and Pakistan bears the scars of a long history of war. Ashton first visited India with a camera as a 22-year-old in the 1970s. For his latest body of workThin Airhe returned to document the fading mementos of war among the mountains: bomb shelters, shrines, monuments to fallen Indian soldiers. "I wanted to photograph the absolute pristine beauty of the place with the added motifs of the history of war. I was interested in the way these relics were melting and reintegrating back into the landscape," Ashton said. "Because of the nature of the atmosphere, things were preserved in a a strange way." ."I was drawn to the barren beauty and the exquisite light of the landscape," Ashton said.' (Ella Rubeli, SMH, 21 August 2015) ROBERT ASHTON studied photography in the 1970s atPrahranCollege under Paul Cox and AtholShmith, and first exhibited his work at Brummels Galleryof Photography (Australia?s first gallery devoted specifically to photography) in 1973.Since that time he has been exhibiting continuously and has work held in many of the public collections in Australia including the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of NSW and the National Gallery ofAustralia. In den Warenkorb[Melbourne : the artist, 1987]. Complete suite of nineteen copperplate photogravures, printed in an edition of 10; 195 x 295 mm (plate size), 370 x 460 mm (sheet size); all untitled, but signed and dated in the plate l.r. 'Robert Ashton 1987', and numbered at l.l. 1/10 (4), 2/10 (3), 3/10 (2), 4/10 (2), 5/10 (2), and6/10 (2), wi…th the four unnumbered examples being artist's proofs; very fine, loosely housed in a custom handmade protective box. Acclaimed photographer Robert Ashton's 1987 series ofcopperplate photogravures were produced from his own photographs, most of them taken in the instantly recognisable locale of Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay foreshore that stretches from St. Kilda around to Port Melbourne, some on Victoria's west coast. The imageshave a consistently dark tonality and ominous mood, and even in those which are visually playful (Ashton delights in the incongruous element, the influence of Cartier-Bresson undeniable) we are drawn to something beyond the present moment: in the physical realm, it can be a reminder of the limitlessness of nature; in the temporal, a sudden sensing of the eternal. In den WarenkorbA collection of approximately 100 original vintage prints (b/w and colour) spanning the period from the late 1950s to the early 2000s, in various formats up to 250 x 200 mm, plus several later copy prints, all unmounted in individual archival sleeves, and housed in an archival album; the sleeves have briefly captioned labels aff…ixed (written by Manuela Furci of the Rennie Ellis Archive) supplying basic information identifying the photographer and either a location or context, and usually also giving an approximate date; the constant subject in all of these photographs is Rennie Ellis himself, and the majority of the collection comprises a kaleidoscopic mix of private and candid shots of Rennie at work and at play, taken by Rennie (self-portraits) and his circle of friends (often using Rennie's own camera), all talented photographers in their own right and including (most prominently) Robert Ashton, William Yang, Carol Jerrems, Ian Dodd, John Ogden, Ian Macrae, and Peter Milne; the balance of the collection is made up of a smaller number of more formal posed portraits; the condition of the prints is generally very good, with only a few exhibiting some surface damage, cropping marks or other minor blemishes. Some key images in the archive: Carol Jerrems (attributed, using Robert Ashton's camera).
