In very good to fine condition, with a vertical slit to the top affecting nothing, and seal-related paper loss to the integral address leaf. - Occupied by naval expeditions in the Indies, Laperouse had been away from his home in Albi for five years at the time he wrote this letter. Unfortunately, he received a lukewarm welcome as his parents vocally disapproved of the woman he hoped to marry. Not wanting to betray his family, Laperouse put off the marriage and returned to the sea, commanding ships against the British during the American Revolution. After finding great success therehe captured two British forts on the coast of Hudson Bayhe returned home a war hero. His family finally consented to his marriage, and in 1785 King Louis XVI appointed Laperouse to lead a scientific exploration around the worlda voyage from which he did not return.…

Knight, lying within Portland Harbour, where she remains for the next two weeks. Towed out of harbour by the tug 'Petrel', she set sail in light winds on December 7th, but the following day the winds strengthened, becoming gale force, with hurricane force squalls, and after suffering damage, the 'Oceania' returned to Portland Harbour on December 13th, where to add to the Master's problems, the Chief Mate deserted the ship. The ship finally sailed on December 20th, and the log covers the first 44 days of the voyage, ending on the 4th February 1907 [Please see our storefront page for shipping information]. …

Good. Light foxing. Some offsetting present. Size 11.5 x 14.25 Inches. A beautiful 1842 map of the Pacific Ocean, Australia, and Polynesia by the important American mapmaker T. G. Bradford. Centered on the Sandwich or Hawaiian Islands, it depicts the entirety of the Pacific Basin along with portions of the surrounding continents. A Closer Look The map covers from the Bering Strait south as far as Cape Horn and from modern day Vietnam east as far as the Gulf of Mexico. Although the interiors of the continents remain blank, the coastlines are relatively accurate. Borneo is misshapen, though improved considerably from Bradford's 1835 map of the same (previously sold by us), as are the Philippine Islands (see Publication History and Census below). The islands of Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia are noted in remarkable detail, often with names no longer in use and whose origin is mysterious. Some of them appear to be phantom islands. In North America, curious landward features such as the placement of San Francisco and 'Ft. McHenry' reveal the minimal level of geographical knowledge of the continent's western half at the time. Publication History and Census This map was prepared by Thomas Bradford and engraved by George Washington Boynton. It appeared in the 1842 edition of Samuel Goodrich's reprint of Bradford's Universal Illustrated Atlas . Though dated 1841, the page number at top-left and text offsetting from an opposite page distinguish it from the 1841 state of the map (held by the David Rumsey Historical Map Collection). The present state is quite rare, having no known history in institutional collections or on the market, though that is likely because extant examples are understandably yet incorrectly dated to 1841. Very good. Even overall toning. Blank on verso. Size 14.5 x 20 Inches. This is a 1951 Jacques Liozu pictorial map of Australia, the East Indies, and Oceania. Stretching from Borneo and Java to Hawaii and from Hawaii and the Philippines to New Zealand, numerous island groups, are depicted and labeled as well, including the Marianas, Carolinas, Marshalls, Gilberts, Fiji, Solomons, and New Hebrides. Vignettes lend an air of levity to this charming piece. Among these are a kangaroo boxes with an Aussie and wins, while another chases a tourist. Two aborigines are illustrated in Australia, one of which just is drawn getting hit in the head with his own boomerang. Other vignettes include a starving shipwrecked man adrift on a raft encircled by sharks and islanders living in the Hawaiian Islands. The Society Islands are marked by a 'society gentleman' fishing from a rowboat wearing a coat with tails, eyeglasses, and a bowler hat. The whole is surrounded by a colorful border that features the flags of Australia and New Zealand, as well as all the colonial powers still holding possessions in the region. Composed in French (with titles in French, English, Spanish, and Italian), islands, island chains, and seas are illustrated and identified throughout. Colors highlight colonial claims of England, France, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands. Insets along the bottom focus on New Caledonia and the Loyalty Islands, Nuku Hiva (the largest of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia), Tahiti, and part of Antarctica.
