FREDERICK JOHN NORTON (1904-1986) fue un bibliógrafo infatigable, un generoso bibliotecario erudito, un viajero incansable, un sorprendente poliglota y un excepcional bibliófilo. La Imprenta en España, 1501-1520 es una excelente introducción a la parte española de su gran repertorio: A descriptive catalogue of printing in Spain and Portugal 1501-1520 (Cambridge, University Press, 1978). El índice de ediciones españolas de los años 1501-1520 que figura en la edición original -Printing in Spain, 1501-1520- sólo cita las recordadas en su texto. Se ofrece ahora, en cambio, el índice bibliográfico de su magno repertorio, acomodado a la tradición bibliográfica española y anotado. Se incorporan noticias de nuevas ediciones y de nuevos ejemplares localizados, las referencias de los repertorios más importantes, aparecidos después de 1978, y se aislan algunas noticias de ediciones imaginarias. JULIÁN MARTÍN ABAD, editor y anotador de esta obra, experto incunabulista y autor de importantes trabajos sobre la historia de los talleres de imprenta españoles del siglo XVI, ha sido Jefe del Servicio de Manuscritos, Incunables y Raros, de la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid. Es Académico numerario de la Academia de Historia y Arte de San Dámaso, miembro fundador de la Asociación Española de Bibliografía, miembro numerario de la Institución de Estudios Complutenses y miembro colaborador del Instituto de Estudios Madrileños.
