There is some rubbing and light soiling to the covers, with a slightly sun darkened spine and light foxing stains mostly on the rear covers. "This book is a definitive presentation of the paintings of David Jones, who lived from 1895 to 1974. Although two exhibitions at the Tate Gallery have devoted themselves to him, he is less well known than he should be, largely because nearly all his work is watercolor and therefore cannot be comprehensively exhibited. He stands in the line of English poet-painters such as Blake, Rossetti, and Wyndham Lewis. Nicolete Gray traces the artist's development perceptively but stresses that it is not necessary to know about his multifarious thought to enjoy his paintings: one needs only to look. The 62 color plates in this book have been made to the highest technical standard to convey Jones's subtle and delicate combination of watercolor, pencil, and chalk.
