"This book is a definitive presentation of the paintings of David Jones, who lived from 1895 to 1974. Although two exhibitions at the Tate Gallery have devoted themselves to him, he is less well known…than he should be, largely because nearly all his work is watercolor and therefore cannot be comprehensively exhibited. He stands in the line of English poet-painters such as Blake, Rossetti, and Wyndham Lewis. Nicolete Gray traces the artist's development perceptively but stresses that it is not necessary to know about his multifarious thought to enjoy his paintings: one needs only to look. The 62 color plates in this book have been made to the highest technical standard to convey Jones's subtle and delicate combination of watercolor, pencil, and chalk. There are also six black and white illustrations." Shelf wear to unclipped dust jacket with closed tear to top of front cover. Minor foxing to top edge. Both book and jacket are otherwise in very good condition. All contents are tight and clean. There are no inscriptions. Laid in is a printed announcment for Book Art Object, published as a record of the first biennial CODEX Book Fair and Symposium, and a circular for Alphabet Festival, by Circle Press. Prospectus for manuscript calligraphic alphabet, for which the artist drew his inspiration from letter forms of the past 1700 years. Drawings were intended to portray the spirit of each letter at a particular historical moment of its life.
