This important work on China is based on the journal kept by the Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci during the time he served in the country (1582-1610). When Ricci arrived in 1582 in Macau, China was still closed to outsiders, but he learned the language, acquired knowledge about the country, and was able to go beyond cultural barriers which gave him entrance to the interior of country. He discovered that Chinese culture was strongly intertwined with Confucian values and therefore used existing Chinese concepts to explain Christianity. Ricci's manuscript was brought back to Europe by his successor Trigault, who translated it into Latin and also changed many passages of the journal and augmented it with information based on several Portuguese missionary reports. An uncommon edition of Nicolas Trigault's two earliest, important letters from China, sent in 1610 and 1611 to Cardinal Claudio Acquaviva in Rome. Trigault (1577-1628) was a Flemish Jesuit who carried out ground-breaking missionary work in China. Inspired by the activities of Matteo Ricci, Trigault founded new missions and encouraged the translation of European works on science and religion (including liturgies) into Chinese. A portrait of Trigault in Chinese costume (now at the New York Metropolitan Museum) was painted by Peter Paul Rubens in 1617, when Trigault visited the Jesuit college in Antwerp to raise funds for his missions. The two letters in this edition were written shortly after his first arrival in Peking and contributed greatly, together with Ricci's texts, to bring in greater knowledge of China to Western Europeans. The 1610 missive is a beautifully-written and engaging factual and anecdotal survey, in the form of a travelogue, of the political, cultural and religious situation of China, including its government ('the King acknowledges no other God but himself') and religious cults, and a description of the principles of the Chinese language (with 'hieroglyphs' which only express 'sounds', not vowels or consonants). The second letter is a long account focusing on the Jesuits' 'adventures' during their missionary work, from their flight from a house fire to meetings with local governors, the administration of holy water to native converts resembling more an exorcism rather than a Christian ritual, and the great difficulties they faced in obtaining a burial place for Matteo Ricci in Peking. Another edition of these influential letters was printed in Rome by Bartolomeo Zannetti in the same year, but no priority has been established. First French edition of a biography of the Jesuit Gaspar Berse (1515-1553), who preached in Ormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf and Goa in India. Berse was born in Goes on the island of Walcheren in Zeeland, the Netherlands. After his studies in Louvain he went to Coimbra in 1546 where he entered the Jesuit order. In 1548 he was sent to the island of Ormuz and in 1551 to Goa where the well-known François Xavier, who would soon depart for Japan, appointed him director of St. Paul's College in Goa and entrusted him with the provincialate of the Indian Mission. He died in Goa on 6 October 1553.With engraved armorial bookplate of John Drummond of Logy Almond on back of title-page. In very good condition. Scarce first edition, in the original Latin, of Gaspar Berse's biography, a famous Dutch Jesuit known for his missionary work in Ormuz (island in the Persian Gulf) and Goa, India. Berse (1515-1553, also known by several spelling variations of his name) was born in Goes on the island of Walcheren in Zeeland, the Netherlands. After his studies in Louvain, he went to Coimbra in 1546 where he entered the Jesuit order. In 1548, he was sent to the island of Ormuz and in 1551 to Goa. Once there, the famous co-founder of the Society of Jesus and leader of the first Christian mission to Japan Francis Xavier (1506-1552) appointed Berse as director of St. Paul's College in Goa and entrusted him with running the provincial office of the Indian Mission. Gaspar Berse became known as the "Dutch Xavier". He died in Goa on 6 October 1553.Nicolas Trigault (1577-1628) was a Jesuit and a missionary in China. Very rare first edition of an important Jesuit report from Japan and China, written during a period when Jesuit missionaries and Japanese converts to Catholicism suffered numerous horrific martyrdoms and persecutions. It recounts in gruesome detail the martyrdoms being suffered throughout the Christian community in Japan; other subjects are briefly mentioned.The provincial Gironimo Majorica (1589-1656), born in Naples, wrote the first letter (pp. 1-158), dated from Macao, 30 September 1623. He reported on the state of the Jesuit colleges at Goa, Chaul, Tana, Bassein and elsewhere in the year 1620. In the following year he wrote a similar but briefer report that mentions the printing of Marco Giorgeo's catechism in the Kanarese language of West India. The present more extensive letter is a compendium of reports garnered from refugees and from a few letters carried by them from prisoners and those in hiding.The letter of 1622 from China (pp. 159-248), written by Nicolas Trigault from Hangchow, is full of material on the advance of the Manchus in northern China: the capture of Liaotung, the fear for the safety of Peking (Beijing), and the outbreak of local rebellions against the young Ming Emperor.This is followed by a letter (pp. 249-310) on the same subjects written by Alvarez Semedo from Nanch'ang, capital of Kiangsi province, in 1623. He reports that three million people died during these wars and that unrest was spreading throughout the country. First French translation, made by the Jesuit Father Pierre Morin, of the De Christianis apud Iaponios Triumphis (1623) of fellow Jesuit Nicolas Trigault (1577-1628), one of the most prominent of the early Catholic missionaries in China. It is an account of the persecutions of missionaries and Japanese Kirishitan in the early years of the Tokugawa Shogunate, based on missionary letters. Father Morin augments his translation with his own Supplement des cinq livres du R. Pere Nicolas Trigaut(pp. 613-631), as well as a Catalogue des martyrs iaponnais qui ont endure pour Jesus-Christ depuis l'an 1612 iusques a 1620 (pp. 632-636), and a Catalogue des maisons et residences de la Compagnie de Jesus ont esté contraints de quitter durant cette persecution (pp. 637-638).The book's publisher, Sébastien Cramoisy, is associated with numerous Jesuit printings.
