Quarto (235 x 170 mm), contemporary limp vellum (upper cover with small loss at bottom corner), spine with early manuscript title and shelf mark; engraved title-leaf by Wolfgang Kilian, with nineteenth-century ownership stamp in red 'Bibliotheque economique [Lasteyrie]', the library of Charles Philibert du Saillant, with associated shelf marks in ink at upper and lower margins; pp. [16], 628, [9 index], [1 colophon, which reads: 'Lugduni, Ex Typographeio Ionnis Iullieron, anno 1616' as in other copies], [2 blank]; one folding woodcut and letterpress plate; fore- and bottom edges a little roughly trimmed, some pale marginal water staining to last 40 or so leaves, otherwise clean throughout; a very good example, with thesmall ex libris label of H. P. Kraus tofront pastedown. Second Latin edition of Ricci's history of the Jesuit mission in China (the first having been printed in Augsburg in 1615), containing important descriptions of Chinese manners, customs and laws. The work was edited by fellow missionary Nicolas Trigault, who augmented his own translation of the Italian manuscript original of Ricci's diary with other writings by Ricci, as well as an account of Ricci's death and burial.     Coloniae (Köln) , Sumptibus Bernardi Gualteri, 1617, in-8°, 168 x 102 mm, engraved architectural title page featuring a portico with the statues of Ricci and Franciscus Xaverius and a small map of China + (16) nn pp (typographical title, dedication to Pope Paul Vth, ad lectorum, index) + 712 pp + (21)(index rerum) + (1)(bl) + folding wood-engraved groundfloor bound in between pp. 704-705. Bound in contemporary ivory colored vellum. With a large gilt supra libro of Paul Carl Welser von Neunhof (1722 - 1788). A very fine complete copy in a nice binding, notwithstanding some very faint, but evenly browned pages. The Jesuit Niklaas Trigault ( or Trigaut ) (Douai 1577 - Hangzhou 1628) , Chinese name Jin Nige Sibaio, first visited China in 1610, he returned to Rome in 1614 . With him he brought the extensive notes made by Ricci on the history of the Jesuit mission in China, together with the first accurate western description of this country. He translated these notes in Latin and added himself many interesting observations on China and the Chinese. The book was published in Augsburg in 1615. Our book is a copy from the second enlarged edition, the first complete one, reworked by the author. This second edition was first published in Lyon in 1616. See De Backer-Sommervogel vol.
