Inselin, Gournay, Louisel and others, about 10 with later hand-colour, 2 folding (early and last leaves frayed and a bit thumbed). Contemporary mottled calf (the spine reinforced with green glazed paper probably in the early 19th-century, very worn). Provenance: plates consecutively numbered in the top margin at an early date. The beautiful and detailed plates include all fortified towns in France, the Low Countries, Germany, Italy and Spain and around the Mediterranean, but also including Constantinople, Tripoly, Algiers, Malta, and unlisted plates of Quebec and the St. Lawrence River (creased), and Batavia. Nicolas de Fer's "Forces de l' Europe" was first published in eight parts between 1690 and 1695. It's original title was "Introduction a la Fortification", and was also chosen for the first part only. This copy is a later re-issue with some plates dated 1705. In 1695, de Fer published the engraved list of 189 plates which is bound here at the beginning along with the table of distances between European towns, bound here at the end. Nicolas de Fer was one of the great map-producers of the 17th century. He became the protégé of Le Grand Dauphin, Louis de France, son of the great Louis XIV in 1689, and when the Duke of Anjou (grandson of Louis XIV) acceded to the throne of Spain, de Fer was proclaimed 'Geographer of the King Spain and of the Dauphin', or again 'Geographer of the Royal children'. De Fer, like the other map-editors encouraged Royal propaganda in his publications, with such headings as "This map that I distribute to the people displays the theatre of your victories." His shop's sign was in fact 'the Royal Globe' an emblem he was very proud of for the image of his armillary sphere can be found in the majority of his publications. While he enjoyed this official support, Nicolas de Fer produced Atlases as numerous as their content was important. His principal quality was to have drawn all his maps according to the new observations and calculations of the Académie des Sciences, and he even solicited for his purposes the Mathematician and Astronomer Ph. De la Hire, himself a member of the Académie des Sciences and Professor at the Collège de France. His father Antoine de Fer had been a modest merchant of engravings and prints and had begun to specialise in map-printing and illuminating from 1646. His productions were third rate, however, and he often reused copper plates produced by other editors. His son, Nicolas, succeeded him with far more success and talent. As a young boy of twelve years old Nicolas was made the apprentice of the engraver Louis Spirinx and inherited his father's modest business in 1687. From then began his illustrious carrier. Three years later he was officially nominated Geographer of the Dauphin, heir to the throne of France. No work signed by him as an engraver has been kept however, for he soon specialised exclusively in map-making. Contemporary mottled calf, each cover decorated with a fine gilt border of double-fillets with winged angel-heads at each inner corner, with a central cartouche of the arms of Bernard Cherin in the centre of each cover, the spine in six compartments, with five raised bands, a red morocco lettering-piece in one, the others decorated in gilt with small gilt volutes and winged angel-heads (one or two early surface tears and a bit rubbed). Provenance: with the Supra Libros of Bernard Cherin (1718-1785), genealogist and historiographer to the King, and of the Orders of St. Lazarus, St. Michael, and the Holy Ghost; with the bookplate of Jean-Paul Morin on the front paste-down of each volume, his sale, Paris, 4th November 2011, lot 33. Contemporary mottled calf, and contemporary speckled calf, gilt (a bit scuffed, front free endpaper of "Suite" torn with loss); preserved in two green clamshell boxes). Provenance: with the near contemporary ownership inscription of Lavalette de Montagneux on the recto of the first blank of each volume, plates numbered in manuscript, and alphabetical indices in manuscript at the end of each volume; the "Suite" inscribed "Pour / Monsieur Jordan / conseiler du Roy, Fer / A Bar-le-Duc" on the verso of the table of contents. First edition, second issue, with the additional "Suite" of plates. Possibly inscribed by a member of the publisher's family to Camille Jordan (1771 - 1821), who was ennobled and named a councillor of state to Louis XVIII at Bar-le-Duc. Jordan was a well-travelled politician, having been born in Lyons which fell to republican forces in 1793, he fled to Switzerland, and from there travelled to England. On the restitution in 1814 he returned to France. Issued in six annual parts from 1700-1705, the maps are based on the new observations of the Academie des Sciences, and with the assistance of Philipe de la Hire. The "Suite" consists mostly of works dated 1714-1716, with two duplicates from the first volume with changed dates, consisting of the maps of Paris (1701, now 1705) and Neuchatel (1699, now 1705). A geographic encyclopedia of images and a celebration of the French Empire under the Sun King, with maps of French possessions in the western hemisphere, detailed views of the grand waterworks at Marly, views of the great palaces and chateaux, views and plans of the Paris Observatory, and samples of military architecture. Maps related to America in the first volume include, the two world maps, Amerique, Canada, Mouth of the Mississippi, California and New Mexico, New Spain, Antilles, Terra Firma Peru, Cartegena, Chile, Straits of Magellan; those in the "Suite" are Jamaica, Santo Domingo, and Mexico city. This charming map of Dunkirk shows the city as it sits on the coast of the southernmost part of the North Sea, here labeled as the Sea of Flanders. Working circa 1705, De Fer has represented the city with a schematized drawing of its exterior walls. Canals c…onnecting the city to nearby towns and churches are also depicted and labeled. Sand bars are drawn and mountains are represented pictorically, and a decorative compass rose at the upper left points due north. The map is in very good condition with no chips or tears and minor staining. Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720) was a French cartographer, engraver and publisher. He became official geographer to the French Dauphin (1691) and to the Spanish King (1702) and was renowned particularly for his maps of the French coast, of which this is a fine example.
