Hardcover. 9th impression. xi, 288 p.; 17 cm. 80 letters from 1821 to Dec. 1836. Papers: Genesis XXII, Psalm XXII, Psalm XXIII. [First printed in 1838] Letter XXXVIII, undated, but between letters dated June 8 and 21st August, 1830, is added (p. 107-15) to the 79 letters in the 1838 edition. -- Harold Rowdon, Origins of the Brethren, dates the Powerscourt Conferences from 1831, under the chairmanship in 1831-32 of Robert Daly, rector of Powerscourt (who remained in the established Church of Ireland and became bishop of Cashel and Waterford in 1843). As editor, `in the following selections, I have studiously omitted everything in the least degree personal. She, of all the Christians I have been privileged to know, came nearest to that which she has, in such strong uncommon terms, stated to be her idea of a Christian: "Not one who looks up from earth to heaven, but one who looks down from heaven on earth."' (from the Preface) -- According to Rowdon, `The 1833 Powerscourt Conference was held from Monday 23 September to Saturday 28 September. If the 1832 conference was important for the light it sheds on the lure of supernatural spiritual gifts and the severing of the last links which held Darby to the established church, that of 1833 was portentous for the future development of the Brethren movement. .Daly played no part in the conference which seems to have been predominantly Brethren in composition. [B. W. Newton] regarded the Powerscourt Conferences as the instrument whereby Darby essayed to end private judgement in the interpretation of prophecy and looked upon the 1833 meetings as "really the commencement of Brethrenism". (p. 96) Good rather rubbed orig. bevelled green cloth, all edges gilt.
