Hardback. Zustand: Good. This volume examines the passenger ships that linked New Zealand with Australia, the Pacific Islands and, at times, North America for a century as well as NZ ports coast-wise. Many of the company's ships were household names throughout NZ as they were often the mainstay of travel. Brewer has selected 37 ships for inclusion and the text for each is accompanied by a photograph and in some case several internal pictures or images related to the vessel. Each account describes the ship, its service with the company, details of incidents or interesting events in its career and its eventual fate. A fleet list of the company's passenger ships (Appendix II) gives technical details and statistis. Heavy; DJ; Owner's Name inside. Nameplate of previous owner on title page.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very good clean copy with only minor shelf wear and two small ownership stamps. The advent of motor vehicle in New Zealand towards the turn of the twentieth century presented transport operators with a new brand of merchandise to carry. It was benzine. The carriage of benzine developed into a substantial branch of the transport industry. However, some of the carriers, especially owners of small coastal steamships, would soon learn through trial and error that the additional business was a mixed blessing. Numerous coastal boats plying for trade had been built during the early days of motoring - or before - and were not designed to carry large quantities of a potent spirit such as benzine.
