hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Records of the Scottish Volunteer Force 1859-1908, Lieut.-General Sir James Moncrieff Grierson â" Facsimile Edition Publication: London, Frederick Muller Ltd., 1972 Formatting: 4to, pp. xxii, 372. Condition Report: Very Good. The dark green cloth binding is exceptionally sharp and secure, with corners remaining unbumped and the gilt lettering to the spine bright and unoxidised. Internally, the text block is clean, tightly bound, and free from foxing or significant shelf-wear, retaining a crisp feel throughout. The primary flaw lies in the dust-jacket, which, while visually intact and retaining vibrant front-panel colours, bears several old, noticeable strips of clear sellotape applied as crude reinforcements to the upper and lower edges of both the front and rear panels, alongside mild sunning to the spine. Despite these jacket imperfections, the volume itself remains a remarkably well-preserved, sturdy copy. Catalogue Note This facsimile edition, originally published in 1909 by William Blackwood & Sons, features a new introduction by Laurence V. Archer. The volume is highly regarded for its comprehensive inclusion of 47 full-colour plates illustrating 239 different uniforms, faithfully reproducing the original chromolithographs. The front free endpaper bears a standard previous owner's signature, "Russell Arthur Hamilton," neatly inscribed in red ink. While the true 1909 first edition commands a significant premium on the open market, this limited reprint has become moderately scarce in its own right, remaining the preferred reference copy for military historians seeking the unabridged contents without the fragility of the antiquarian first printing. A monumental work of military scholarship, Records of the Scottish Volunteer Force 1859-1908 offers an exhaustive history of the Scottish Volunteers prior to the major army reorganisations of 1908. Grierson's meticulously detailed account covers the formation, structure, and distinctive dress of the units, accompanied by magnificent colour plates that bring hundreds of historical uniforms to life. Essential for military historians, genealogists, and enthusiasts of Scottish martial heritage, this definitive reference preserves a vital era of British military history in breathtaking detail.
