Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. Andrew Millard (Author photograph) (illustrator). xxvi, 466, [4] pages. Author's Note. Illustrations. A Note on Sources. Selected Bibliography. Sources. Notes. Index. Damien Gavin Lewis (born March 1966) is a British author and filmmaker who has spent over twenty years reporting from and writing about conflict zones in many countries. He has produced about twenty films. He has written more than fifteen books, some of which have been published in over thirty languages. His books have appeared on bestseller lists in many countries. He is a Fellow of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Lewis worked as a war correspondent, and between 1991 and 2005 he wrote, directed, produced and filmed a number of documentary films for National Geographic, the BBC, Channel 4 and Discovery, amongst others, largely focusing on investigating and exposing environmental and human rights violations in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Freda Josephine Baker (née McDonald; June 3, 1906 April 12, 1975), naturalized as Joséphine Baker, was an American and French dancer, singer, and actress. Her career was centered mostly in France. Baker was among the most celebrated performers to headline the revues of the Folies Bergère in Paris. Her performance in its 1927 revue Un vent de folie caused a sensation in the city. Her costume, consisting only of a short skirt of artificial bananas and a beaded necklace, became an iconic image and a symbol both of the Jazz Age and the Roaring Twenties. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she renounced her U.S. citizenship and became a French national after her marriage to French industrialist Jean Lion in 1937. Baker aided the French Resistance during World War II, and also worked with the British Secret Intelligence Service and the US Secret Service, the extent of which was not publicized until 2020, when French documents were declassified. After the war, she was awarded the Resistance Medal by the French Committee of National Liberation, the Croix de Guerre by the French military, and was named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour by General Charles de Gaulle. On November 30, 2021, Baker was inducted into the Panthéon in Paris, the first black woman to receive one of the highest honors in France. Derived from a Kirkus review: A sympathetic chronicle of the wartime exploits of Josephine Baker (1906-1975). Lewis concentrates on the wartime years, creating a heroic portrait of the selfless, brave, pioneering, unswervingly patriotic spy for the Allies who was active even before the Nazi occupation of Paris. The author provides details about Britain's Secret Intelligence Service in France, an agency that worked closely with the Deuxième Bureau, France's counterespionage service. All were locked in an intelligence battle with the Abwehr. Baker was running her own club, Chez Josephine, and hobnobbing with admirers of all nationalities. She was effective in feeling out the allegiances of significant figures from Italy, Japan, and Spain. Baker's Deuxième Bureau supervisor, Capt. Jacques Abtey, also became her lover. After being forced to retreat during the occupation, they worked in various locales and slipped effortlessly across national borders. The author explores how her wartime work set her on the postwar course of civil rights activism. First U.S. Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].
