A fine survey of the fragmentary inscriptions that once stood on the Acropolis of Athens, "recording the "first fruits" (???????) offered to the god Athena, one mina per talent (i.e., one sixtieth), from the tribute paid by the allied cities in the third quarter of the 5th c. BCE. Summarized (usually one entry per city) from the texts of IG I(3): 71, 259-91. Numbers have been multiplied by 60 and converted to talents. Note that the order and restoration of the fragments keep changing with new discoveries; names and numbers here lack indication of the degree of restoration and should not be trusted for any scholarly purpose. Readers should be sobered by the existence of so many tribute-paying peoples whose names go unmentioned in surviving ancient literature" (entry from the topos text #21). Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound in hardcover format, green buckram cloth over boards, gilt lettering to spine, generally clean but for a couple of ink-stamps of previous owner, the Classicist Peter Morris Green. Lightly toned at worst, minimal rubbing to extremities. Plentiful black-and-white tables and illustrations, lists and charts. Rubbing to boards and spine, with fairly heavy rubbing to spine ends. Title on spine is heavily rubbed and barely visible. Some bumping to corners. Ex Libris of W. Kendrick Pritchett on front pastedown, with some discoloration along front and rear hinges. Interior has been annotated in pen and pencil throughout by Pritchett. Interior mostly clean, with only some light staining on a couple of pages. First gathering somewhat loose, but the binding is still quite sound. While working on his Ph.D. at The Johns Hopkins University, Pritchett was a research assistant to Benjamin Dean Meritt at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Co-authored with Meritt, this was Pritchett's first book, and was published two years before he received his doctorate. From Pritchett's personal library, this copy bears annotations throughout, and laid-in are a 1949 issue of Atti Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, as well as the final page of a newsletter from the Institute for Advanced Study, which appears to have been written in 1953 or 1954. Cloth. Zustand: Near Fine. First Edition. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR BENJAMIN DEAN MERITT on the first blank endpaper. A very solid copy to boot of the 1928 1st edition. Clean and Near Fine in its navy-blue cloth, with bright gilt-titling along the front panel and spine. Mild bumping to the lower tips and at the foot of the spine, otherwise very sharp. Clean as well internally, with no writing (other than the author inscription) or other marks to speak of. Tall quarto, a handful of crisp black-and-white plates complementing Benjamin Meritt's text. 2 fold-out plates tucked into a sleeve at the rear pastedown as well. Signed.…
