Melmoth's fictionalized letters, first published under a pseudonym in 1748, were highly s…uccessful, and include a number addressed to his wife 'Cleora'. Born in 1710, Melmoth occupied himself mainly with classical translation, and became one of the most prolific and successful practitioners of his day.
