Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. New York: Derby & Jackson, 1859. Published 1859. Library of Popular Tales series. Heavily worn copy of this hard-to-find moral tale about three apprentice boys - "the first, a lad of correct principles, industrious habits and ambitious to excel as a good citizen, - the second, 'a real good-hearted boy' but full of fun and conviviality, and easily led astray by his fellow apprentice . whose precocity in vice, and low indulgences, we see paralleled daily in the conduct of numerous half-grown men about town". Dark brown cloth with gilt spien lettering and elaborate blind-stamping to the covers, 465 pages. Covers heavily rubbed and chipped, especially the spine, joints externally cracked but hinges good, text block sound, pages age-toned and foxed, name on front free endpaper, no other markings. Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. John McLenan, Winslow Homer, and others (illustrator). This edition appears to have been published in 1861 by Harper & Brothers. It is a hardcover, sewn-bound in black or very dark brown cloth, with a decorative title on front cover in gilt, and on spine gilt lettering and numbers ("Harper's Weekly" "1861") (see photos), and is in G condition, having some staining to front cover; spine has two damaged areas near front cover hinge (see photo); top and bottom spine have some wear; overall rubbing/scuffing to both covers and spine; overall volume is in very good shape for its age, but does have a few torn or missing page corners, and the large foldout map near center of book, a map of the "Southern States," has some small tears to it in folds and on edges, and is detached from the binding, but is in overall good shape considering it age and apparent handling; because of book's age, pages are very fragile; some occasional stains and ink-outs on inside pages. Book is profusely illustrated with wood engravings, many designed by Winslow Homer (using as models photographs by Matthew Brady), and many by John McLenan. Many engraved maps. This volume is a treasure-trove of articles on the American Civil War, then just beginning. The variety of other articles and compositions is vast, and notably in this volume (for the year 1861) is the first continuing appearance in America of the novel "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens (beginning with Chapter 10, and concluding with the end of the novel, Chapter 57). This Dickens work is illustrated by John McLenan. Other compositions include short stories, humorous pieces, and poetry. Periodicals. United States. 19th century. The American Civil War. Nineteenth-century American life and people. This volume is gigantic (16 1/2 inches high, 11 1/2 inches wide, and 2 1/2 inches thick) and heavy (almost 10 pounds), and because of this, extra-shipping cost may apply. DB-CB.

Gilt title is bright, publisher's adverts at front and rear are State B. Text block is tanned with a smattering of smudges.** With The Woman in White, Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) created a new literary genre -- sensational fiction, combining Gothic horror and psychological realism -- which profoundly changed the course of English popular writing. The novel is a deviously plotted story of an affable art tutor, Walter Hartright, who encounters a lost woman, clad in all white, on the streets of London. He reports her to the authorities only to discover that she had escaped from an asylum. Later, Walter is hired as an art teacher for Laura, who looks stunningly similar to the woman in white he met previously. As Laura and Walter fall for one another, the mystery deepens and the story slowly unravels.** The illustrations for the U.S. edition are by John McLenan (1827-1865), a noted caricaturist who illustrated works by Dickens and Collins for Harper's Weekly.** Pasted into the front cover is a clipping of "As the World Wags," a column by Philip Hale (1854-1934) that appeared in The Boston Herald, praising McLenan's illustrations.** First U.S. Edition; state B of the ads (August 1860, Mulock), second binding (woman in black).** "Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight.
