Text block is tanned with a smattering of smudges.** With The Woman in White, Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) created a new literary genre -- sensational fiction, combining Gothic horror and psychological realism -- which profoundly changed the course of English popular writing. The novel is a deviously plotted story of an affable art tutor, Walter Hartright, who encounters a lost woman, clad in all white, on the streets of London. He reports her to the authorities only to discover that she had escaped from an asylum. Later, Walter is hired as an art teacher for Laura, who looks stunningly similar to the woman in white he met previously. Small print over two columns, with in-text engravings by John McLenan. Rebound in… brown cloth preserving original blind-stamped covers and gilt title panel on spine, black endpapers. Contents toned as usual, otherwise clean. Recent binding is solid. A nicely presented, useable copy of the first edition. Collins' epistolary novel is considered to be amongst the earliest pieces of mystery fiction, and is certainly a fine piece of 'shocker' writing. You can't go wrong with a sinister warning from a seemingly mad woman encountered in Hampstead, a bit of a mismatched love story, and a shady character who goes by the truly fantastic name of Sir Percival Glyde. The first US edition likely predates the UK edition; the British publisher's circular states that their triple-decker appeared in mid to late August, 1860, while the US publication date was 14th August 1860.

The obscure American illustrator and caricaturist John McLenan (1827-1865), originally a meat-packer in Cincinnati, was active from 1852-1865, contributing a number of designs to "Harper's Weekly". He is most remembered for his illustrations of "A Tale of Two Cities." An early printing of one of Dickens's most treasured works. A story set in the late 18th century against the background of the French Revolution, with vivid scenes of large-scale mob violence. Dickens's novel not only condemns aristocratic tyranny, but it criticizes revolutionary excess at the same time.
