April 1864 in Erfurt geboren. An den Universitäten von Heidelberg, Straßburg, Berlin und Göttingen studierte er Jura. Dem 'Verein für Socialpolitik', dessen Profil er erheblich mit prägte, trat er 1888 bei. Max Weber promovierte 1889 und habilitierte sich 1891. Als Professor für Handelsrecht lehrte er von 1893 bis 1894 in Berlin. Danach unterrichtete er als Professor für Nationalökonomie in Freiburg (Breisgau) und ab 1897 in Heidelberg. Von 1919 bis zu seinem Tod am 14. Juni 1920 war Weber Professor in München.
