Soft cover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Maróczy Géza: Végjátékok és játszmák [Endgames and plays] (Budapest, 1941.) Pantheon. (Printed by Elsö Kecskeméti.) 136 p. 1 errata. First original Hungarian edition. Publisher's illustrated paper wrappers. Géza Maróczy (1870 1951) was a Hungarian chess player, one of the leading players in the world in his time. He was one of the inaugural recipients of the title International Grandmaster from FIDE in 1950. Between 1902 and 1908, he took part in thirteen tournaments and won five first prizes and five second prizes. Today the Maróczy Bind (see below) and the Maróczy Gambit bear his name. In 1906 he agreed to terms for a World Championship match with Emanuel Lasker, but the arrangements could not be finalised, and the match never took place. With him at the head, Hungary won the first Chess Olympiads in London (1927). In 1950, FIDE instituted the title of Grandmaster; Maróczy was one of several players who were awarded the title based on their past achievements. Capablanca held Maróczy in high esteem. In a lecture given in the early 1940s, Capablanca called Maróczy "very gentlemanly and correct" and "a kindly figure", praised the Maróczy Bind as an important contribution to opening theory, credited him as a "good teacher" who greatly helped Vera Menchik reach the top of women's chess, and "one of the greatest masters of his time." - Capablanca. He then traveled to Europe, residing for a time in England and France while challenging the continent's top players. He played matches with most of the leading English and French players, as well as the German Adolf Anderssen?again winning all matches by large margins. In 1859, Morphy returned to the United States, before ultimately abandoning competitive chess and receding from public view. ( O,O ) /)__) , ,

Soft cover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Géza Maróczy: Internationales Meisterturnier Györ, 1924. Györ, (1925.) Györer Schachklubs. 2 t. (images) 122 [2] p. with chess diagrams. First edition. Publisher's paper wrappers. The second congress and international tournament of the Hungarian Chess Federation, which took place in August 1924, is of great importance in the history of chess. The book bears witness to the fact that Hungarian chess organization (specifically the work of Ferenc Chalupetzky and László Tóth from Györ) was world-class, capable of attracting international grandmasters to Hungary even amidst the dire economic conditions following the war. At the time, Géza Maróczy was one of the world's finest players and most respected analysts (later becoming the mentor to World Champion Max Euwe). The analyses found within the book represented the technical pinnacle of the era. The German-language edition (Internationales Meisterturnier) was produced specifically to grant the international community access to Maróczy's insights. Maróczy provided thorough analysis not only for his own games but for those of every participant, helping to disseminate the modern, so-called "hypermodern" theories of the day. Due to its nature as a Selbstverlag (self-published) work, this book is exceptionally rare. Rather than a mass-produced volume from a major publisher, it is a professional publication born of the local devotion of the Györ Chess Club. ( O,O ) /)__) , ,

Stamp of former owner Dr. Prof. Alois Mann on cover and title page, inscription of name on cover. - -- - Twenty experts, divided into two sections of ten each, participated in the international masters' tournament held at Kecskemet, Hungary, from June 25 to July 12. After the preliminary tournaments in each section, A and B, which were won by Dr Alexander Alekhine and L Steiner, respectively, the four leaders in each entered section A of the finals, engaging in an additional round robin tournament, and the four next in order in each preliminary section contested a similar final in section B. The upshot of it all was that Alekhine gained another important victory and came through as winner of the tournament without meeting a single defeat, but with only half a point to spare over Steiner and Nimzowitsch, who divided the second and third prizes in Section A Finals. Dr Asztalos won the fourth prize, Dr Vajda, Kmoch and Ahues divided the fifth, sixth and seventh prizes, and Gilg won the Eighth.
