Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Sheer Enjoyment of Paul Morphy In the middle of the nineteenth century, a soft-spoken young man from New Orleans would upend the conventional chess world. Perplexing positional pressure coupled with breath-taking combinations would leave him virtually in a class by himself. In 1909, Hungarian Grandmaster Géza Maróczy - himself a world-class player in the first decade of the 20th century - penned a wonderful compendium of all-known games of the American champion. The book, in German, was an instant success. And now (finally!) it is available in English. The book contains over 400 games by Morphy, most deeply annotated by Maróczy. He uses a light hand when explaining the logical and positional concepts of the games, while not overlooking the historical background and context in which they were played. In addition, a brief section on Morphy's endgame skill has been added by GM Karsten Müller and a look from 'a modern perspective' has been provided by GM Valeri Beim. Maróczy's subtle, often poetic insights regarding Morphy's greatness provide an indispensable perspective. Why read Maróczy's magnum opus today There are of course several good reasons, from a historical standpoint the book is a must-read. From a chess perspective, a complete collection of Morphy's games makes a very deep impression. In short, there are a host of good reasons for chess lovers to celebrate Maróczy's classic Paul Morphy, not the least of which is the sheer enjoyment of watching the incomparable maestro at play. - From the Foreword by Charles Hertan, author of The Real Paul Morphy.…

In den WarenkorbHalf cloth. xv, 436 pages. Text in German. Clean and tight copy with minimal signs of use, front board slightly stained. "Paul Charles Morphy (* 22. Juni 1837 in New Orleans, Louisiana; 10. (Wikipedia). 777g.…

First original Hungarian edition. Publisher's illustrated paper wrappers. Géza Maróczy (1870 1951) was a Hungarian chess player, one of the leading players in the world in his time. He was one of the inaugural recipients of the title International Grandmaster from FIDE in 1950. Between 1902 and 1908, he took part in thirteen tournaments and won five first prizes and five second prizes. Today the Maróczy Bind (see below) and the Maróczy Gambit bear his name. In 1906 he agreed to terms for a World Championship match with Emanuel Lasker, but the arrangements could not be finalised, and the match never took place. With him at the head, Hungary won the first Chess Olympiads in London (1927). In 1950, FIDE instituted the title of Grandmaster; Maróczy was one of several players who were awarded the title based on their past achievements. Capablanca held Maróczy in high esteem. In a lecture given in the early 1940s, Capablanca called Maróczy "very gentlemanly and correct" and "a kindly figure", praised the Maróczy Bind as an important contribution to opening theory, credited him as a "good teacher" who greatly helped Vera Menchik reach the top of women's chess, and "one of the greatest masters of his time." - Capablanca. In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Géza Maróczy: Internationales Meisterturnier Györ, 1924. Györ, (1925.) Györer Schachklubs. 2 t. (images) 122 [2] p. with chess diagrams. First edition. Publisher's paper wrappers. The second congress and international tournament of the Hungarian Chess Federation, which took place in August 1924, is of great importance in the history of chess. The book bears witness to the fact that Hungarian chess organization (specifically the work of Ferenc Chalupetzky and László Tóth from Györ) was world-class, capable of attracting international grandmasters to Hungary even amidst the dire economic conditions following the war. At the time, Géza Maróczy was one of the world's finest players and most respected analysts (later becoming the mentor to World Champion Max Euwe). The analyses found within the book represented the technical pinnacle of the era. The German-language edition (Internationales Meisterturnier) was produced specifically to grant the international community access to Maróczy's insights. Maróczy provided thorough analysis not only for his own games but for those of every participant, helping to disseminate the modern, so-called "hypermodern" theories of the day. Due to its nature as a Selbstverlag (self-published) work, this book is exceptionally rare. Rather than a mass-produced volume from a major publisher, it is a professional publication born of the local devotion of the Györ Chess Club. ( O,O ) /)__) , .…
