From the cover notes: Marko Marulic was born in 1450 in Split, at that time part of the Venetian empire, where he was first schooled in the Liberal Arts. He compiled a collection of excerpts from classical authors, the Bible, and early Christian writers, and earned fame with his Instruction on How to Lead a Virtuous Life Based on the Examples of the Saints. His epic poem in Croatian about the Old Testament heroine Judith (1501, first published in 1521) makes him the Father of Croatian literature. He wrote mostly in Latin, and both his prose and his verse are steeped in the tradition of Christian humanism. Writing until his last days, Marulic died in 1524. The Davidiad is Marulic's ultimate masterpiece, written between 1510 and 1517. It tells the biblical story of King David in elegant Latin hexameters resounding with the echoes of Vergil, Ovid, early Christian poets, and contemporary humanists. It was never published during his lifetime, and was considered lost for centuries. The poem's unique autograph manuscript resurfaced in the Biblioteca Nazionale of Turin a century ago, having survived the famous 1904 fire that destroyed many of the library's manuscripts. This volume contains a new readable Latin edition and the first ever complete English translation - in unrhymed iambic pentameter - of the Davidiad, along with the Tropological Commentary which Marulic himself wrote about his epic story of David.'.

Although remembered today as the father of Croatian literature, Maruli? (1450-1524) achieved his greatest European reputation through his Latin devotional writings. A humanist from Split, he combined classical learning with Christian moral instruction, producing works intended for spiritual formation rather than scholarly display. His De institutione bene vivendi per exempla sanctorum became his most widely disseminated work, circulating across Catholic Europe in numerous Latin editions and vernacular translations and establishing him among the most widely read devotional authors of the sixteenth century. The Portuguese version owes much of its importance to its translator, Fr. Marcos de Lisboa (c. 1511-1591), the distinguished Franciscan chronicler, later Bishop of Porto, and one of the leading figures of sixteenth-century Portuguese religious literature. Published only a few years before the appearance of his celebrated Chronica da Ordem dos Frades Menores, the translation belongs to the formative period of his literary career and reflects his broader programme of making influential works of Christian devotion accessible to Portuguese readers in the vernacular. It became the standard Portuguese version of Maruli?'s most celebrated work and represents one of the earliest substantial vernacular devotional books printed in Portugal during the post-Tridentine Catholic renewal. Although Maruli?'s Latin works circulated in Iberian religious and scholarly libraries throughout the sixteenth century, the present volume remained the only printed edition of any of his works produced on the Iberian Peninsula before the mid-seventeenth century. This gives Marcos de Lisboa's translation an exceptional position not only in Portuguese devotional publishing, but also in the wider Iberian reception of Maruli? Two typographical variants of the 1579 edition are known. The present copy belongs to the variant with the architectural title-page border incorporating the SOLI DEO HONOR cartouche, rather than the alternate setting with standing human figures flanking the title. The Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal notes that the two settings differ not only in the title page, but also in the preliminary leaves and the signatures of the first gathering. As in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal copy of this setting, the present copy contains an additional inserted gathering, although here a different gathering is repeated, and concludes with the final unsigned N5 leaf. The edition is of exceptional rarity. USTC records only 3 copies outside Portugal libraries, (Oxford, Harvard, and the Hispanic Society, New York), a comprehensive survey of Maruli? holdings in Spanish libraries additionally identified copies in the Biblioteca Nacional de España and the Monastery of Yuso. One of the fathers of Croatian literature, Marulić (1450-1524) was an aristocrat from Split who probably studied law at Padua, and, except for occasional travelling to Venice and Rome, spent most of his life in Dalmatia. He was a prolific, polyglot author and translator his production spanning sonnets in Italian and a partial translation of Dante s Inferno into Čakavian. Whilst he shared the contemporary humanist interest in classical antiquity, Marulić s religious and moral ideals were deeply rooted in the medieval exegetic and hagiographic tradition, as epitomised by his most successful and much translated De institutione . Divided into six books, it teaches the tenets of the good Christian life through accounts of those of exemplary holy figures, using as sources the works of theologians like Jerome, Saint Gregory, and Eusebius. De inventione suggests that humankind can defy the flaws imposed by the original sin and be rescued by Christ through faith and profoundly Christian conduct. The Sechs Bücher rectified the incomplete German translation of De institutione published in Cologne in 1563. In the preface, Herman Baumgartern explains how he was urged by the Bishop of Augsburg to re-translate Marulić s work into German so that Catholic priests, nuns and monks might read it during meals or in solitude to meditate on the exemplary life of Christ, the Virgin Mary, the patriarchs, prophets, apostles, martyrs, and worthy religious, to comfort laymen and parishioners at a moment in which the German Church was under threat. Among the subjects for meditation is a section on suffering and how the lives of the martyrs can teach us how to endure pain, resist the devil and face death. A long table of contents lists all the holy figures mentioned in the book and each of their exemplary actions, so that readers may look up specific loci for meditation. Marulić s work attracted the interest of Jesuits like Francis Xavier for its structural similarities to Ignatius of Loyola s contemplation exercises, including meditations on the life of Christ. The most praised 'Illyric' humanist of his day, he was the author of numerous, mostly theological works in Latin, Croatian and Italian. Dell'humiltà is a posthumous Italian translation of his De humilitate et gloria Christi, first published in Venice in 1519. It focuses on Christ's humility, beginning with meditations on Christ's life, from his persecution to his death other episodes also providing the basis for the subsections in the rest of the work. Part II demonstrates how all that was said in Part I had been foreseen by the Prophets; Part III explains how, after earthly suffering, can come eternal bliss. The translator, Giuseppe Alcaini (d.1619), was a Venetian Dominican who intended this work to be used for personal meditation by a wide readership unacquainted with Latin.
