Bon exemplaire de ce rare ouvrage, dont la figure de l'enregistrement du pouls a été enrichie à l'époque de commentaires manuscrits. "Marey's central significance for the development of physiology in France lies in his adoption and advocacy of two fundamental techniques in experimental physiology : graphical recording and cinematography". [ . ] "During the first decade of his research career (1857-1867) Marey applied the technique of graphical recording to the study of the mechanics and hydraulics of the circulatory system, the heart beat, respiration, and muscle contraction in general. He analyzed the circulatory and muscular systems in terms of the physical variables, elasticity, resistance, and tonicity. With the graphical trace he established the relationship of heart rate and blood pressure, thus supplementing previous studies of the value of blood pressure in a vessel with traces of its waveform" (DSB, IX, 101). Etienne Jules Marey, physician and physiologist, first began his fascination with movement through his discoveries in circulation and blood pressure. This early work inspired him to explore the movement of the body itself, comprised of linked parts that are subject to universal physical laws. He nurtured the art of capturing cycles of movement through time in a single frame, such as seen on page 58. The book covers such topics as chronophotography, kinetics, dynamics, locomotion in humans from an artistic point of view, locomotion of quadrupeds, the flight of birds and insects, and microscopic chronophotography. The International Scientific Series covered dozens of topics from "Darwinism" to "comparative literature".
