Marey pioneered the use of graphical recording in the experimental sciences, using instruments (many of his own invention) to capture and display data impossible to observe with the senses alone, and to record visually the progression of such data over time. He began by applying graphical recording methods to problems in physiology, using machines to investigate the mechanics of the circulatory, respiratory and muscular systems. After 1868 he turned to the study of human and animal locomotion, and in the 1880s he began using cinematography to record animal motion, making him one of the pioneers in this field. The first two offprints listed above are on human locomotion: No. (1) discusses the stereoscopic images described by a certain point on the trunk during walking, running and other gaits, while no. (2) discusses the mechanics of jumping. The third and fourth offprints are on animal locomotion: No. (3) illustrates the motion of a ray's fins during swimming, and no. (4) contains a series of chronophotographic images showing how a cat lands on its feet after being tossed from a height. . …

Later binding of quarter blue morocco and cloth with the spine in six compartments and title label in gilt, The original printed paper wrappers are bound-in. Occasional scattered foxing. SIGNED and inscribed by the author to Maunier DeFlore, "The Bee Tamer", on the blank leaf. A very good copy. This title is one of the most famous works of Marey, and the culmination of 30 years of research into the scientific applications of motion-analysis. He further developed animated photography into a separate field of chronophotography, with his revolutionary idea to record several phases of movement on one photographic surface. His research on how to capture and display moving images had a profound influence upon Thomas Edison and Luis Lumière in the emerging field of cinematography. Additionally, a fire destroyed a portion of the publisher's stock of this title. Marey's work was closely followed by his friend, Nadar (Gaspard-Felix Tournachon). In his autobiography, QUAND J'ÉTAIS PHOTOGRAPHE, beginning on p. 193, Nadar speaks of a visitor to his studio, Maunier DeFlore, "The Bee Tamer", who had presented his calming effects upon them in exhibitions in Marseille and Brussels. In chapter 14 of LE MOUVEMENT, Locomotion Dans L'Air: Vol des Insects, Marey illustrated the movement of the bee's wings while in flight. He had devised an intricate study where he tied a bee to a string allowing its wings free movement while one touched a rotating cylinder covered with a lightly blackened paper, enabling his graphic methodology.
