Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Text in Finnish and English. 150 pp. In 1906 C.G. Mannerheim, then a cavalry colonel, set out on a horseback journey commissioned by the Russian general staff. It was to take him across Asia, from Samarkand to Peking, where he arrived two years later. Mannerheim's assignments on the way ranged from military reconnoitering and surveying work to inguiring into current conditions and public sentiments in Chinese Turkestan and the province of Gansu. His activities also extended to archaeological and ethnographical research. On his 14.000-kilometre trek he secured several collections of value to Asian studies, as well as more than a thousand photographs. Until now these pictures have been relatively neglected. However, they show Mannerheim to have been a confident photographer with an eye for interesting subjects. His camera takes in everything from landscapes, horses and military drill to folk dances and opium dens. The images add up to an authentic and colourful portrayal of a remote, bygone world, of little-known peoples, and of many things and ways of life now irrevocably lost. This is the first book devoted exclusively to Mannerheim's photographs. It contains 87 plates, many of them previously unpublished. Excerpts from Mannerheim's own travel journals complement the pictures.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. ix, [3], 540 pages. Frontis illustration. Index. Cover is soiled and worn, especially at edges. Corners rubbed and bumped. Ink notation on fep. Baron Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (4 June 1867 - 27 January 1951) was a Finnish military leader and statesman. Mannerheim made a career in the Imperial Russian Army, rising to the rank of lieutenant general. He also had a prominent place in the ceremonies for Tsar Nicholas II's coronation and later had several private meetings with the Russian Tsar Mannerheim served as the military leader of the Whites in the Finnish Civil War, Regent of Finland (1918-1919), commander-in-chief of Finland's defence forces during World War II, Marshal of Finland, and the sixth president of Finland (1944-1946). In a Finnish survey 53 years after his death, Mannerheim was voted the greatest Finn of all time. In addition, he is the only Finn to have held the rank of field marshal, an honorary rank bestowed upon especially distinguished generals. In a time dominated by the political ideals of democracy, communism and fascism, Mannerheim tired of the disputes of the first, hated the proletarian nature of the second and had an uneasy relationship with the third. Yet at various stages in his life he found himself forging an entente between these ideologies, and despite his personal views on them, retained a realistic view of what would be best for Finland. An unusual Finnish patriot, for he could speak Swedish, Russian and French fluently, as well as English, German and Polish passably, yet he didn't learn Finnish until he turned fifty, and even during the Second World War needed a Finnish translator to speak to his own troops. . Yet he guided Finland through the dark days of it's formation, united his country and gave them a genuine feeling that they were Finns, successfully steered Finland through three wars with great powers and one civil war, and was the man who most contributed to Finland's sovereignty that still exists today. First Edition [stated]. Presumed first printing.

2 volumes. (30,5x22cm). IV, 741; IV, 54, 16, 48, 36, 36, 12, 6, 30, 12 pp. With numerous illustrations in text, one small map after the preface, and 15 folding maps in the second volume. Half sheepskin, cloth sides. First edition of a travelogue through Asia, written by Carl Gustav Mannerheim (1867-1951), future president of Finland, 1944-1946. In 1906, Mannerheim, then a colonel, was sent on an expedition to Asia. "The object of this expedition was to study conditions in the interior of Northern China, collect statistical materials and perform various tasks of a military nature", says Mannerheim in the preface. Russia wanted to know the state of affairs in China due to the reforms and modernization undertaken by the Qing Dynasty. Besides that, Mannerheim wanted to collect items of scientific interest for the National Museum in Helsinki and to study the little-known peoples living in Northern China. This makes the work, with its numerous illustrations by photographs, an interesting anthropological account as well. The first volume contains Mannerheim's journal with many photographs. The second describes the scientific results the artefacts Mannerheim took with him to Helsinki and, including sculptures, costumes and utensils. - Number 33 out of limited edition of 100 and signed by the author. Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. 434 & 462, 2-vol. set, illus., index, half-leather binding somewhat worn, some fading to spines. No dust jackets present. Fine bindings. Text is in Swedish. The memoirs of Marshal Mannerheim (1867-1951). He was a Finnish general and politician, and the leader of the conservative forces in the civil war 1917-18 and regent 1918-19. He commanded the Finnish army 1939-40 and 1941-44, and was president of Finland 1944-46. Because Mannerheim was old and sickly, he personally wrote only certain passages of his memoirs. He dictated some other parts. The remaining parts were written from his recollections by Mannerheim's various assistants, such as Colonel Aladár Paasonen; General Erik Heinrichs; Generals Grandell, Olenius and Martola; and Colonel Viljanen, a war historian. As long as Mannerheim was able to read, he proofread the typewritten drafts of his memoirs. He was almost totally silent about his private life, and focused instead on Finland's history, especially between 1917 and 1944. When Mannerheim suffered a fatal bowel obstruction in January 1951, his memoirs were not yet in their finished form. They were published after his death. Baron Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (4 June 1867 27 January 1951) was a Finnish military commander, aristocrat, and statesman. He served as the military leader of the Whites in the Finnish Civil War (1918), as Regent of Finland (19181919), as commander-in-chief of the Finnish Defence Forces during World War II (19391945), and as the sixth president of Finland (19441946). He became Finland's only field marshal in 1933 and was appointed honorary Marshal of Finland in 1942. Born into a Swedish-speaking family in the Grand Duchy of Finland, Mannerheim made a career in the Imperial Russian Army, serving in the Russo-Japanese War and the Eastern Front of World War I and rising by 1917 to the rank of lieutenant general. He had a prominent place in the 1896 coronation ceremonies for Emperor Nicholas II and later had several private meetings with him. After the Bolshevik coup of November 1917 in Russia, Finland declared its independence on 6 December, but soon became embroiled in the 1918 Finnish Civil War between the Whites, who were the troops of the Senate of Finland, supported by troops of the German Empire, and the pro-Bolshevik Reds. A Finnish delegation appointed Mannerheim as the military chief of the Whites in January 1918; and he led them to victory, holding a triumphal victory parade in Helsinki in May. After spending some time abroad, he was invited back to Finland to serve as the country's second regent, or head of state, from December 1918 to July 1919. Despite being a monarchist, he formally ratified the republican Constitution of Finland. He then ran against K. J. Ståhlberg in the first Finnish presidential elections in 1919 but lost and quit politics. Mannerheim helped found the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare in 1920 and headed the Finnish Red Cross from 1922 to his death. He was restored to a central role in national defence policy when President Svinhufvud appointed him as the Chairman of the Finnish Defence Council in 1931, tasked with making preparations for a potential war with the Soviet Union. It was also agreed that he would temporarily take over as commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces should there be a war. Accordingly, after the Soviets invaded Finland in November 1939 in what became the Winter War, Mannerheim replaced President Kyösti Kallio as commander-in-chief, and occupied the post for the next five years. He became a unifying symbol of the war effort and part of the core leadership of the country. He personally participated in the planning of Operation Barbarossa and led the Finnish Defence Forces in an invasion of the Soviet Union alongside Nazi Germany known as the Continuation War (19411944). In 1944, when the prospect of Nazi Germany's defeat in World War II became clear, the Finnish Parliament appointed Mannerheim as President of Finland, and he oversaw peace negotiations with the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom. Already in declining health, he resigned the presidency in 1946 and spent much of his remaining life in a sanatorium in Switzerland, where he wrote his memoirs, and where he died in 1951. Participants in a Finnish survey taken 53 years after his death voted Mannerheim the greatest Finn of all time. During his own lifetime he became, alongside Jean Sibelius, the best-known Finnish personage at home and abroad. According to Finnish historian Tuomas Tepora, a cult of personality began to be built around Mannerheim right after the civil war.Given the broad recognition in Finland and elsewhere of his unparalleled role in establishing and later preserving Finland's independence from the Soviet Union, Mannerheim has long been referred to as the father of modern Finland, and the New York Times called the Finnish capital Helsinki's Mannerheim Museum, memorializing the leader's life and times, "the closest thing there is to a [Finnish] national shrine" First Edition thus, presumed first printing.
