The author, Colonel Francis Maceroni, born Francis Macirone (1788-1846), was a soldier, diplomat, revolutionary, balloonist, author and inventor. Maceroni became a Colonel of Cavalry and served as aide de camp to Murat maintaining a correspondence with him throughout their contacts which form the basis of this work. 168pp. Rebound in modern quarter binding in red bubble-grain morocco with marbled paper to remainder. Spine has five raised bands and a black morocco title plate with gilt lettering. Endpapers renewed. Page edges left untrimmed. Some toning to pages.

"Nach der Leipziger Niederlage verließ Marschall Murat die französische Armee. Er wechselte die Seiten hinüber zu den Alliierten, und England und Österreich garantierten ihm seine Herrschaft in Italien. Aber während der Hundert Tage schloss Murat sich wieder Kaiser Napoleon I. an, nachdem der Wiener Kongress ihm seine Staaten nicht sicherte. Bei seinem Versuch, Unteritalien und das wieder bourbonische Neapel zurückzuerobern, wurde er gefangen und am 13. Oktober 1815 auf Anordnung des siegreichen Königs Ferdinand I. standrechtlich in Pizzo (Kalabrien) erschossen. Colonel Macirone (1788-1846), Sohn eines ital. Kaufmanns aus Manchester, ist auch unter dem Namen "Count Maceroni" bekannt. Er war damals Murats Adjutant. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Frankreich wurde er wegen seiner illegalen Unterhandlungen für die Interessen Murats ins Gefängnis geworfen. ?
