The two volumes are uniformly bound in black buckram, lettered in gilt. This work is a study and analysis of an extensive collection Christian music c…urated by the author's grandfather, E. S. Lorenz (1854-1942). It examines "sixty hymnbooks and hymnals dating from 1817, a similar number of tunebooks dating from 1825, and about 200 Sunday-school songbooks dating from 1857." The study includes folk songs as well as revival meeting hymns, and each song is illustrated with a facsimile of its printed sheet music. E. S. Lorenz was hired in 1873 by the United Brethrern in Christ as music editor of their publications. "Fortunately for the recent study, that demonination never imposed a ban on folk hymns. as did the Methodist Church, and he was free to include them, and did, with appreciation of their beauty and worth." It constitutes one of the earliest studies of the "American spiritual" and campmeeting songs, and shows an awareness of the secular British source of the tunes. It also includes a "Comparison of Campmeeting and Negro Spirituals.".
