Zustand: Good. By 1853 Brahms had emerged as a force in music and would afterward be acknowledged as the greatest master of the symphonic form of the last half of the century. In that generation of composers, only Dvořak (for whom he had a special regard and to whom he gave invaluable aid) produced as much chamber music as the prolific Brahms. This prodigious outpouring, perhaps more than any other aspect of Brahms's oeuvre, provides a clear and uninterrupted view of his artistic development. Here reproduced in this handsome, inexpensive volume is a superb selection of chamber works -- masterful compositions by Brahms, written for violin, viola, cello, and piano. Reprinted from the reliable Breitkopf & Hartel edition, they include Quintet in F Minor, Op. 34; the Quartet in C Minor, Op. 25; and Quartet in A Major, Op. 26, distinguished by their variety of moods, gypsy coloring, and richness of ideas; and the Quartet in C Minor, Op. 60, with its somber and foreboding atmosphere.Standards of the repertoire, these four compositions are strongly dramatic, richly inventive, and filled with ingenious thematic transformations. Musicians, music lovers, and any admirer of Brahms will welcome their appearance in this convenient, affordable edition. Large, readable noteheads and ample margins for notations make this excellent volume an important addition to the library of every serious student of chamber music. …

Zustand: Good. Often called the last of the great classical composers, Brahms accommodated powerful romantic inclination to the demands of traditional musical form. The result is a delightful mixture of classical form clothed in the multicolored hues of German romanticism. (John Gillespie, Five Centuries of Keyboard Music).Brahms's masterful synthesis of these disparate elements: his inventive rhythmic drive and happy fusion of poetry and sound workmanship are strikingly evidenced in the concerti. Although he wrote only four -- two for piano, one for violin, and one double concerto for violin and cello -- they have all become absolute staples of the concert repertoire. Because they are for different instruments, however, they have rarely been available together in one convenient volume -- until now. This Dover edition reproduces all four concerti directly from Breitkopf and H rtel's definitive S mtliche Werke, Volumes 5 and 5, c. 1920-27. The original editor's commentary by Hans Gal is included both in German and in English. The four concerti are Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 15; Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op. 83; Violin Concerto, Op. 77; and Concerto for Violin and Cello, Op. 102.With this single low-priced volume, students, composers, and musicologists may savor Brahms's development in the form (extending over three decades, 1845-87). Conductors and librarians will have a handy, inexpensive, complete collection, and musicians and music lovers will find a way to experience the inexhaustible variety of one of music's great masters.…

Zustand: Good. Faced with the daunting legacy of Beethoven's symphonic works, Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) took twenty years to shape his first symphony -- a masterpiece that premiered in 1876 to great critical acclaim. The expansive Symphony No. 1 in C Minor perfectly displays Brahms's ability to organize a variety of moods into a coherent whole. The dramatic tension and somber coloring of the first movement are balanced by two central movements of charming lyrical relief; and the finale, with its grand main theme and famous horn solo (inspired by a shepherd's horn call), is considered one of the great movements in the orchestral literature. The symphony is published here in full score, with bar-numbered movements. Ideal for study in the classroom, at home, or in the concert hall, this affordable, high-quality, convenient sized volume will be the edition of choice for music students and music lovers alike.…

Zustand: Good. The Breitkopf & Hartel edition of the complete works of Brahms (Johannes Brahms: Samtliche Werke; Ausgabe der Gesellschaft der Musikfrunde in Wien), prepared in the 1920s, is still considered the standard source for the music of Brahms. It is the music of Brahms as the composer himself conceived it, without any editor's additional markings of dynamic change, tempo variation, slurrings, phrasings, etc. As the pure, authentic text for the music of Brahms, the edition is unlikely ever to be superseded. This volume is an unabridged republication of Volume 7 of the Complete Works. It contains the Sextets Opp. 18 and 36 (2 violins, 2 violas, 2 cello); the Quintets Opp. 88 and 111 (2 violins, 2 violas, cello); the three Quartets Opp. 51, No. 1, 51 No. 2, and 67 (2 violins, viola, cello); and the Quintet for Clarinet, Op. 115 (2 violins, clarinet -- or viola -- viola, cello).Hans Gal, the editor for this and many of the other volumes in the series, states in a short preface the sources for the texts of the eight compositions. In every case these include at least two sources, and often as many as four; the edition in score and in parts as published by N. Simrock, Berlin; Brahms's personal copy of the Simrock score; and the original manuscript. The preface discusses the few corrections and significant variant readings. In the Dover edition, this preface is provided in both German and English.…
