In den Warenkorb2pp., 12mo. 29 lines of closely-written text. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. 'Such a calamity must be a terrible blow for you all but more especially to Mrs. Joy and yourself. To lose a daugher just blossoming out into womanhood is tragic indeed, the more so, if that were possible, in that she was such a bright girl.' He continues 'By the same post I have word that one of my uncles has just died, and that another has been given up by the doctors. They have both lived full lives, and, in their way, interesting lives, so that, there, one can hardly talk of a tragic end. Yet it leaves an empty chair, and severs another tie. I remember the walks and talks we had on the hills together and through our interests have diverged since my boyhood days I shall always have the kindliest memories of the one who has gone and theo other lying at death's door as I write.'.…

In den WarenkorbThe subject of this letter is Huntingford's 'Pindari Carmina', 'excudit R. Watts sumptibus T. Cadell et W. Davies', published in London in 1814. Watts had been made Printer to the University of Cambridge in 1802, resigning in 1809 because, as Stokes notes in his 'Cambridge Stationers, Printers, Bookbiinders, &c' (1919), 'the Press did not prosper under his rule, although, when he left Cambridge, he did good work as a printer of Oriental volumes'. Between around 1812 and 1815 he was working in Broxbourne. In 1816 he moved to London, where he established the Oriental Type-Foundry, Temple Bar. 2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Huntingford begins by reporting that he 'received the clean sheets' that morning, and by apologising for sending an overweight frank. He continues: 'As this is almost the last time I shall have occasion to write to you, I take the present opportunity to thank you for the ready attention you have paid to my directions in the course of the Work, and to congratulate you on the credit that work will do to the Broxbourne Press, from the beauty of the Types & Paper, and, generally speaking from the great correctness with which it is executed.' In a long postscript he states that he will soon send what 'remains of the Work': 'the Dissertation, the additional Notes from Benedict, & the list of Errata [] The remaining clean sheets can be sent in franks.' The postscript concludes: 'The sooner the Work is done, the better; as I believe the school at Winchester is waiting for it. [ Huntingford was a Wykehamist ] Let me know how long it will take to knock up & bind the copies of the work, which you intend to send out, after the printing is finished.'. …

In den WarenkorbSee his entry, and that of Colburn, in the Oxford DNB. Campbell agreed to edit Colburn's 'New Monthly Magazine' in 1820, his first number in the post being that of January 1821, and the letter was presumably written between this period and Mrs Campbell's death in 1828. The reference to 'Mr Ollier' would close the dates even further: the Oxford DNB's entry for Charles Ollier (1788-1859) stating that, after financial difficulties, 'by the autumn of 1825 he returned to the publishing trade as the chief literary reader and adviser to Henry Colburn in New Burlington Street'. 1p, 12mo. On the recto of the first leaf of a bifolium, the verso of the second leaf being addressed by Mrs Campbell to 'H. Colbourn Esqr / 8 New Burlington St- / In Mr Colbourn's absence to Mr Dubourg' (i.e. Colburn's agent George Dubourg). Campbell's misspelling of Colburn's name is puzzling, considering his professional association with him. In good condition on browned and lightly-worn paper. With folds for postage. The first eleven words are in a more inky style than the rest of the letter: 'Mrs Campbell thanks Mr Colbourn for the volume about the Catholics but will not have occasion to keep it - Mr Campbell requests to have the proof sheet of Hazlitt's article about which Mr Ollier spoke to him -'. …

In den WarenkorbAn interesting exchange, casting light on manegerial practices in late-Victorian theatre. ONE: Typed Letter Signed by 'W. Lestocq'. 2pp., 4to. In good condition, lightly aged. A long letter, single-spaced. He has 'talked over the whole matter of the prospects of "The Christian" tour with Mr Frohman for next season, and he does not desire to send out a company on tour himself. Now I could of course let it on Mr Frohman's behalf or perhaps sell his rights and the production outright.' He gives details of his first choice if the latter course were pursued. He explains his 'sliding scale' of 'the percentages for the large towns cited in the contract namely Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dublin, Leeds and Newcastle and Brighton'. 'You can be sure in your interests that if you agree that in the event of my selling outright I should transfer your contract I will of course endeavour to insist that the percentages are taken over as arranged by Mr Frohman but I can tell you I quite contemplate being told that they are too heavy in the large towns. They certainly are too heavy for Mr Frohman to ask a profit on these percentages which is the usual way of letting a play and would of course I think strangle your run'. TWO: Autograph copy of HC's reply. Entirely in pencil, signed 'Hall Caine', and with 'Copy' at foot. 1p., 8vo. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. The letter begins: 'Before proceeding to negotiations outside, if Mr. Frohman takes an unfavourable View of the business & the Prospects of "The Christian" in the Provinces, will he not first say on what terms he would be willing to pass over to me his remaining Share in our agreement? This should take Cognisance of the present State of affairs between us, with £1000 paid by Mr Frohman in advance, & a large part of it already worked off in royalties.' In what follows HC praises Frohman's 'unfailing fair-mindedness'.…
