If lady Theresa derives half the pleasure from its perusal which Mr C. has derived on at least three occasions she will indeed have a great treat.' He thanks her for her 'correction of his error about the Russell & Murray picture', and 'observes that Dallaway [in his 'Anecdotes of the Arts in England', 1800] states its after locality as 'Ombresley Worcestershire."' He names another picture mentioned by Dallaway of which he has 'no recollection', asking her to 'help him in this matter'. He ends 'Mr Cunningham knows some curious particulars about Mrs. Kirke - a great beauty in her day.'.

A few minor nicks and spots to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, front joint cracked, rear board beginning to separate but secure. Moderate toning to interior, some offsetting to endleaves. $250. * Second and final edition, one of two issues, both in 1766. "[A new treatise on this subject].is very necessary for the justice of the peace [and attorney]. And it is absolutely necessary for the sporting gentleman [and farmer]. Another reason, why a new treatise on the Game-Law is become necessary, is, the multiplicity of new statutes that have been passed, and the cases that have been determined within these passed few years, and which have almost entirely altered the face of the Law with respect to these matters" [iii]. The first edition of this work was published in 1764 and reissued twice, with one issue under the author's name, in 1766. Remembered today as the author of an important law dictionary, Cunningham was one of the most prolific and versatile legal writers of the eighteenth century. Containing reports of cases decided by Lord Chief Justice Hardwicke, his Reports is prefaced by an interesting 17-page tract, "offered to the consideration of both houses of Parliament" titled "A Proposal for Rendering the Laws of England Clear and Certain." Later editions were published in 1770 and 1871. Contrary to its title, this book does not include cases past the eighth year of George II. A note on p. Contemporary calf, rebacked in period style, blind rules to boards, blind fillets along joints, raised bands and lettering pieces to spines, hinges mended. Light rubbing, faint stains and minor scuffing to boards, heavier rubbing to board edges, corners bumped and somewhat worn, early armorial bookplates to front pastedowns. Moderate toning, light foxing in places. Early owner signature of Penry Williams to head of title pages, interiors otherwise clean. $950. * First edition. "As the furnishing of justices of the peace with a sufficient variety of precedents, formed upon the words of the acts of parliament, was the sole motive for compiling the following sheets; so the reader may be assured that no forms are published, but such as appear to the compiler to be accurate. (.) The statutes under each title are inserted in a chronological order; which may serve to give the reader an idea of the progressive improvements made in the statute law, and be useful for many other purposes" (iii). Cunningham was a member of the Middle Temple and the author of an important law dictionary. A second edition of his JP manual was published in 1769; a supplemental volume to this edition followed in 1770. Two men named Penry Williams, father and son, of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, served as justices of the peace for Brecknockshire.
