Christine Covington and the old man she meets in Reno-who calls himself Socrates-have both learned these lessons the hard way.Socrates, a homeless wanderer, has evaded the law for twenty years and has created a mythical place called Athens, Nevada. Christine, a young woman, has escaped the oppression of a family member. As they endeavor to stay beneath society's radar, Christine (in disguise) and Socrates spend the summer together bicycling through the mountains of California and the old gold-rush towns of Nevada, panning for gold. Along their journey, Socrates shares his wealth of wisdom, teaching Christine a new way of thinking. As suspense builds, Christine and Socrates eventually discover they can't escape their pasts forever. With the FBI pursuing Socrates and police authorities searching for Christine, the pair manages to evade their pursuers, but only for so long. Finally captured, Socrates is subjected to a modern trial just as the real Socrates was in 399 B.C. Through it all, the friendship between Socrates and Christine deepens as they learn how to better handle their problems.A Summer with Socrates will delight you with its twists, turns, and surprises, keeping you reading and learning from the opening pages to its eloquent ending.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. First Edition. (no dust jacket, as issued) [nice clean copy with no discernible wear, only a couple of short diagonal creases at the bottom corners of a couple of pages]. (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper, to screenwriter Walter Newman and his wife: "13 November 1991 / For Walter & Connie -- / Across the years. / Wonderful years. Dear, / True Friends ----- / Ever, / Norman." A lengthy interview with the actor/director/producer who was in showbiz for close on to a hundred years, and worked with Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Charlie Chaplin, Lewis Milestone, and a host of others, and enjoyed a late-career acting renaissance with a recurring role on the TV hospital drama ST. ELSEWHERE. And as anyone who knew him can attest, he was a world-class raconteur, a talent fully on display in this book. Signed by Author.

In den Warenkorbpaperback. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Fotografie
Vintage portrait photograph of Norman Lloyd from the classic 1942 Hitchcock film, with a provenance stamp on the verso. From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s. A high spot among Alfred Hitchcock's early thrillers, and the director's only collaboration with author Dorothy Parker, who contributed to the screenplay. The film included much more location footage than most of the director's pictures, including Boulder Dam, locations in New York City including Radio City Music Hall and Rockefeller Center, and of course Liberty Island for the famed closing scene on the Statue of Liberty. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine. Grant US. Selby US. Spicer US.
