In den WarenkorbReprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 148-150. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on first page, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: The text of Minucius Felix Octavius 26.1 reads: lam enim venio…ad ilia auspicia et auguria Romana, quae summo labore collecta testatus es et paenitenter omissa et observata feliciter. Recent translators of and commentators on Octavius almost unanimously follow the received opinion and construe testatus es both with (auspicia et auguria) . . . et paenitenter omissa et observata feliciter and with (auspicia et auguria). . . summo labore collecta.' This construction is, however, unwarranted syntactically and it produces an odd sense, for it is hardly possible to assert seriously that Caecilius took great pains to collect the auguries and auspices (Clarke) or that he collected them au prix des plus grands efforts (Beaujeu). - Wikipedia: Jerzy Sever Linderski (born 21 August 1934 in Lwow, Poland, now Lviv) is a contemporary Polish scholar of ancient history and Roman religion and law. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: The editors of Christian authors have naturally been much more Chri…stiani than Ciceronian! Yet the study of Roman antiquities, and in particular of Roman religious terminology, may often be very helpful in discovering the correct sense and correct text of hitherto unintelligible passages. The text of Rufinus, Origenis in Numéros Homilia 17.2, offers an instructive example. The text as printed in the authoritative edition by W. A. Baehrens, Origines, Werke 7 (Die Griechischen Christlichen Schriftsteller der ersten drei Jahrhunderte 30, Leipzig, 1921), 156, reads as follows (Origenes-Rufinus comment on Num. 24:1 referring to Balaam): Denique non abiit [sc. [The same text in Migne, Patr. Graeca, vol. 20, col. 704]. - Wikipedia: Jerzy Sever Linderski (born 21 August 1934 in Lwow, Poland, now Lviv) is a contemporary Polish scholar of ancient history and Roman religion and law. In den WarenkorbReprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 463-480. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text: The problems encompassed in the tit…le of the present note are not without interest: an emperors scornful allegation, a biographers attempt at a learned explanation, and the imagination of modern scholars have all contributed to making the story of Livias maternal grandfather and the Aufidii Lurcones both intricate and amusing. Suetonius seeks to refute the assertion of Caligula, expressed in a letter to the senate, that the maternal grandfather of Livia Augusta was of humble origin, only a decurion of Fundi. The biographer states : publids monumentis certum est Aufidium Lurconem Romae honoribus functum (Caligula 23. 2). There is no doubt that an Aufidius Lurco obtained honores in Rome (he may well be identified as one of the senatorial Lurcones of Ciceros time, see below, part II), but Suetonius and his modern followers erred in taking him for Livias maternal grandfather : on the evidence of inscriptions the name of Livias mother was Alfidia ? f. (and not Aufidia). - With author's dedication to W. Haase. - Author's name handwritten on Cover, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text: As there is no difference… between pleasure and hardship, why not demonstrate ones virtue in prosperity rather than in adversity and poverty? Quid ergo est? asks Seneca. Malo quid mihi animi sit ostendere praetextatus et fcausatus quam nudis scapulis aut + sententis. In a recent issue of AJP (101 [1980] 446) A. W. Camps rushed to rescue this text from the tormentum crucis. In place of the nonsensical causatus, the reading of our best authority, the codex Ambrosianus, he proposes to read canusinatus. The wool of Canusium was indeed famous, and it was used, as Camps notes, for the warm outergarment, called the paenula. I object to this sanatio, for however captivating it might appear, it is guilty of three crimina. - Wikipedia: Jerzy Sever Linderski (born 21 August 1934 in Lwow, Poland, now Lviv) is a contemporary Polish scholar of ancient history and Roman religion and law. Its aim is a very limited one : to attempt to clear up current misconceptions concerning Mommsens interpretation of Festus phrase legibus praefecti mittebantur. In order to understand the nature of the controversy, it is necessary to adduce the text of Festus in extenso. - Wikipedia: Jerzy Sever Linderski (born 21 August 1934 in Lwow, Poland, now Lviv) is a contemporary Polish scholar of ancient history and Roman religion and law.
