Fotografieren und das Erkunden der Stadt waren für ihn untrennbar miteinander verbunden. Die meisten seiner Bilder entstanden in den New Yorker Vierteln, zu denen er fast vierzig Jahre lang Woche für Woche, Jahr für Jahr zurückkehrte: Lower East Side, Coney Island, Harlem und Times Square. Dies waren Orte, an denen sich die Dramen des Lebens oft auf der Straße abspielten, wie auch in den Ländern, in denen er auf seinen Reisen seine eindrucksvollsten Werke schuf: Haiti, Indien und Mexiko [Museumsinfo].
