Er verklärte weder das Leben der Menschen, die er fotografierte, noch verurteilte er sie, während er durch die Straßen der Stadt streifte. Fotografieren und das Erkunden der Stadt waren für ihn untrennbar miteinander verbunden. Die meisten seiner Bilder entstanden in den New Yorker Vierteln, zu denen er fast vierzig Jahre lang Woche für Woche, Jahr für Jahr zurückkehrte: Lower East Side, Coney Island, Harlem und Times Square. Dies waren Orte, an denen sich die Dramen des Lebens oft auf der Straße abspielten, wie auch in den Ländern, in denen er auf seinen Reisen seine eindrucksvollsten Werke schuf: Haiti, Indien und Mexiko [Museumsinfo].

It reproduces twenty of Levinstein's stark images of the Big Apple's streets and denizens of the fifties and sixties along with an essay by Limelight gallerist and colleague Helen Gee. A documentary expressionist with a practice firmly focused on its own concerns, Levinstein left witness and commentary to others" (Sam Stourdzé).
