Der Band enthält neben der deutschen Übersetzung auch den chinesischen Text, kalligraphiert von Kwok-Lap Chan.Laotse (auch Lao-tzu oder Lao Tan), der berühmteste Philosoph des Taoismus, lebte im 6. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Über sein Leben ist wenig bekannt. Der Legende nach kam es einmal zu einem Zusammentreffen mit seinem kongenialen Zeitgenossen Kungtse (Konfuzius). Laotse stammte aus dem Dorf Hu-hsien in Ch'u, der heutigen Provinz Honan und war Archivar am Hof des Königs von Chou, bevor er sich nach Westen zurückzog; hier verlieren sich sein Spuren. Richard Wilhelm (1873-1930), Pfarrer, Pädagoge und Missionar, Professor für Sinologie, Übersetzer und Herausgeber, hielt sich 1899-1921 und 1922-1924 in China auf. Er gab 1910-1930 die Quellensammlung "Religion und Philosophie Chinas" heraus.
