Jahrhundert v. Chr. Über sein Leben ist wenig bekannt. Der Legende nach kam es einmal zu einem Zusammentreffen mit seinem kongenialen Zeitgenossen Kungtse (Konfuzius). Laotse stammte aus dem Dorf Hu-hsien in Ch'u, der heutigen Provinz Honan und war Archivar am Hof des Königs von Chou, bevor er sich nach Westen zurückzog; hier verlieren sich sein Spuren. Richard Wilhelm (1873-1930), Pfarrer, Pädagoge und Missionar, Professor für Sinologie, Übersetzer und Herausgeber, hielt sich 1899-1921 und 1922-1924 in China auf. Er gab 1910-1930 die Quellensammlung "Religion und Philosophie Chinas" heraus.
