"Erste deutsche Ausgabe. ? Sehr interessante sozialkritische Schilderung des schottischen Missionars Buchanan (Wirkungsdaten 1780-1816) über die harten, ungerechten Lebensbedingungen auf den Äußeren Hebriden. "Was ich niederschrieb, wird, wie ich wohl weiß, viele kleine Tyrannen gegen mich aufbringen ." (Vorrede) Nach der biographischen Einleitung des Übersetzers Meyer hat Buchanan dem Philanthropen William Wilberforce, der sich für die Abschaffung des britischen Sklavenhandels einsetzte, ein Exemplar seines Buches mit der Bitte geschickt, sich seiner Insulaner gleichfalls anzunehmen! Im Oxford Dictionary of National Biography liest es sich etwas anders: "The miscellaneous writer William Thomson (1746-1817) edited Buchanan's Travels .` from a huge mass of material and, without Buchanan's knowledge, inserted some severe criticisms of the Scottish clergy and others which Buchanan in his General View of the Fishery of Great Britain` (1794) indignantly disclaimed. The quarrel between the two men was aired in public and Buchanan seems to have come off worse. There is no record of Buchanan after 1816." (VIII, S. 483) ?
