Der belgische Humanist Laevinus Torrentius (1525-1595) war ab 1587 Bischof von Antwerpen.- Der erste, bereits 1950 erschienene Band umfaßte die "Période Liégioise 1583-1587"; die vorliegenden Bände decken die "Periode Anversoise" ab (II: 1587-1589, III: 1590-1595). (F4 blank); text largely in double column, 2 engraved portraits of Horace and Laevinus Torrentius; printer's woodcut device on title page and F3v at the back, woodcut initials and ornaments; a prize binding in contemporary full parchment, turned edges, double gilt rules on covers enclosing the gilt coat-of-arms of Amsterdam on both covers; binding soiled, ties perished, but overall a very good, sound, and clean copy. With a printed presentation leaf bound in as the frontispiece, dated 1672, for "Insignes in artibus humanioribus progressus," signed in ink Jacobus Gliblotz (?). "Elegantly printed by Plantin: with a prettily engraved portrait of Torrentius who was Bishop of Antwerp. 'Critica et inter principes numeranda est editio,' say Harles and Mitscherlich. Harwood also observes that the notes of Torrentius are 'accurate and judicious.' It seems that Torrentius had access to many mss. at Rome, among the most valuable of which was the Codex Laurentianus; but as Torrentius did not live to give the finishing corrections to his edition, the readings of these mss. are not embodied in the volume. The notes of Torrentius do not extend beyond the second epistle of the second book: to the Ars Poetica the commentary of Nannius is subjoined" (Dibdin). Mills College Check List 265.
