RISTAMPA de…lla prima edizione di Lovanio (pubblicata lo stesso anno) della raccolta di saggi filologici, in prevalenza presentati dall'umanista belga nel corso delle sue lezioni presso il Collegium Trilingue di Lovanio. ?Sans être volumineux, ce receuil est l'un de ceux qui ont le plus contribué à établir la renommée philologique de son auteur; il donne en effet, une idée générale de sa sagacité, de la moderation de son caractère et de l'étendue de son erudition? (A. Polet, Une gloire de l'humanisme belge Petrus Nannius, Louvain, 1936, p. 144). L'opera is apre con la dedica al politico inglese William Paget datata 1 giugno 1548 (cf. Oxford Bibliographical Society, Proceedings & Papers, 1927, I, p. 210). I dieci libri del volume contengono un'interpretazione di Terenzio (Libri I e II); un commento ad Orazio (Libro III: contiene inoltre un resoconto della scoperta di quattro antichi manoscritti di Oratio nella biblioteca del monastero benedettino di San Pietro, a Gand, o ?Mont Blandin? Questi sono I cosiddetti ?Blandinian manuscripts?, che andarono distrutti nell'incendiò del monastero nel 1566); un'interpretazione di alcuni passi delle Satire e delle Epistole di Orazio (Libro IV); commenti ad alcuni brani di Livio (Libro V); un commento ad alcuni passaggi della Bucolica e dell'Eneide di Virgilio (Libri VI e VII); una difesa di Erasmo contro Robortello (Libro VIII, vedi sotto); il commento ad alcuni passaggi di Cicerone (Libro IX) e diversi commentari sulla geologia, sull'etimologia, sulla grammatica comparata, sull'astronomia antica, sulla storia e sul diritto romano (Libro X) (cf. L'umanista italiano Franceso Robortello, soprannominato "Canis grammaticus" (cane della grammatica) per il suo atteggiamento esigente e conflittuale, nell'opera ?Variorum locorum annotationes (1543)? critica alcune delle parafrasi degli Apophthegmata di Diogene Laerzio fatte da Erasmo. ?The shortcomings of Robortello's Annotationes were notices by Petrus Nannius, who devoted chapter VIII of his Miscellanea (1548) to the defense of Erasmus Apophthegmata. The first part of this chapter consist of a detailed discussion and, if possible, refutation of Robortello's notes. Contrary to Robortello, the Leuven professor shows a clear understanding of Erasmus' intention and method, without being blind to the errors he came across. He does not deny that the Italian critic was sometimes right, but disapproves of the acerbitas of his tone. Nannius quotes Robortello's annotations almost in full before discussing them. Sometimes he proves that Erasmus' interpretation was right. In other cases he tries to explain why Erasmus rendered the apophthegm as he did, or at least to mitigate the criticism. The second part of the chapter VIII, were Nannius corrects Erasmus' interpretation of nineteen other apophthegms, departs from the same benevolent attitude? (T.L. Petrus Nannius (Pieter Nanninck) nacque ad Alkmaar, dove Alardus di Amsterdam, gli insegnò latino presso l'allora famosa scuola locale. Tra gli altri furono suoi insegnanti Bartolomeo di Colonia, Rutgerus Rescius e Johannes Murmellius. Nel novembre del 1518 iniziò gli studi presso l'Università di Lovanio, dove probabilmente incontrò Erasmo. Dopo la laurea, insegnò per un anno presso la scuola latina della sua città natale e nel 1521 fu nominato rettore della scuola lati.

With a printed presentation leaf bound in as the frontispiece, dated 1672, for "Insignes in artibus humanioribus progressus," signed in ink Jacobus Gliblotz (?). "Elegantly printed by Plantin: with a prettily engraved portrait of Torrentius who was Bishop of Antwerp. 'Critica et inter principes numeranda est editio,' say Harles and Mitscherlich. Harwood also observes that the notes of Torrentius are 'accurate and judicious.' It seems that Torrentius had access to many mss. at Rome, among the most valuable of which was the Codex Laurentianus; but as Torrentius did not live to give the finishing corrections to his edition, the readings of these mss. are not embodied in the volume. The notes of Torrentius do not extend beyond the second epistle of the second book: to the Ars Poetica the commentary of Nannius is subjoined" (Dibdin). Mills College Check List 265. Bound in near contemporary leather over oak boards, raised spine with gilt decoration. Used binding with some leather restorations, inside clean copy. Provenance; on the title page an old… manuscript ex-libris '' Carthusiae Lovaniensis '' . On the first fly leaf a 19th c. stamp from a Dutch Roman Catholic Seminary, on the title also a small circular stamp with the initials ''L.B.''. A fourth manuscript ex-libris has been shaved by the binder at the upper margin. It looks like another reference to the '' Carthusiae Lovaniensis'' Apart from the used binding a nicely preserved copy. This edition of the complete works of the Greek-Alexandrian church father Athanasius was edited by Petrus Nannius (Alkmaar 1550 - Leuven 1557 ) . He dedicated this work to his friend Antoine de Perrenot, bischop of Atrecht , later cardinal Granvelle, first archbischop of the Southern Netherlands. Nannius became professor at the Collegium Trilingue upon the death of Goclenius. The first edition of this work was published in Basle in 1556 by Froben in 4 volumes and again in 1564. Nannius had made a new translation of Greek source texts . Valentin Ampelander was the editor for this 1556 edition. USTC N° 138441.
