Contemporary Half Leather H/B. Zustand: Very Good. Second Edition. 1823. Second edition. [vi], 500pp. Louis Simond (1767-1831) resided in and travelled through Switzerland near the start of the 19th century. His account of his travels through Switzerland, together with a history of ancient and modern Heltetia, was first published in two volumes in 1822, with the first volume containing an account of his travels, and the second the history. For sale is the second volume only, from the second edition. It contains the history and is complete in itself in this respect. The book is bound in contemporary half leather over marbled boards with gold titling and gold stamped design with four thin raised bands on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some expected shelf wear on the boards and light scuffing to the leather on the spine. The bottom front corner is bumped with a small bit of loss to the leather on ther corner tip. The contents are tight and clean with five oval purple stamps from a private hotel, dated 1918, on the front and rear endpapers. There is a single similar stamp on page 222.…

Cloth. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. An uncommon copy of this contemporary account of post-Napoleonic Switzerland, drawing upon Simond"s extensive travels through the Alps. Rebound in a later full cloth binding with a segment of an earlier calf spine bearing the gilt-lettered title laid down to the spine. Endpapers renewed. Published as part of Phillips's Voyages and Travels, Volume VII, this is an abridged and rearranged English translation of Louis Simond's account of his travels through Switzerland between 1817 and 1819. Phillips's publisher's notice explains that this version confines itself to the travel portion, selecting and reorganising its principal material. Simond records his journey from Fontainebleau into Switzerland, describing the Jura, Basel, the Swiss lakes, Alpine scenery and settlements, and the valley of Chamonix and Mont Blanc. Louis Simond (1767-1831) was a French-born merchant, traveller and writer. Born into a Protestant family in Lyon, he emigrated to the United States before the French Revolution and became a successful merchant in New York. His narrative combines observations of landscape and geology with accounts of local history, society and recent events, including the catastrophic Rossberg landslide. Externally, very smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities. The odd minor mark to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with one or two light spots to fore edge.
