Very good. - An extensive warm letter typed on 10-1/2 inch high by 8 inch wide "Department of the Army Office of the Chief of Staff" stationery with the "Department of Defense" seal pictured at top left. The Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff, Major-General J.D. Alger writes to his friend retired Major General Philip DeWitt Ginder that "Miss Januski, 'your favorite secretary', sent me a note relative to your conversation with her and I have checked on Pvt. Lee. This is a rather simple case because I find that Lee is on the January levy for the 4th Armored Division." He mentions that he was in town "the other day" when he took his god-daughter to West Point but it was too rushed a visit to call. "By the way, what is Jean's schedule for the City Center this fall and winter series?" "We might be able to make one or two." After writing that he wished Ginder and Jean had met his god-daughter Juliet, he teases that "On second thought, I probably wouldn't have introduced you to her!". He closes by saying that "Consuela joins me in sending warm greetings to you and Jean". Signed "Jim". There is a light paper clip stain at the top and a red check mark across the text with a filing annotation penned at the top left. Folded for mailing, else fine. Together with Major-General Alger's "change of address" card from the Department of the Army, Washington, D.C. to Southern Command, Fort Amador, Canal Zone, dated July 1st, 1964 and mailed to Major-General Ginder. Provenance: From the estate of Major-General Ginder's wife, Jean Dalrymple. Major-General Alger and Major-General Ginder both served in Korea. While serving in the Second World War, Major-General James Dyce Alger was captured and was incarcerated as a prisoner of war in Germany. He was awarded the Prisoner of War Medal as well as the Legion of Merit medal for WWII as well as Legion of Merit and distinguished Service medals for his service in Korea and Vietnam. Philip deWitt Ginder (1905-1968), one of the first ashore during the Normandy invasion on D-Day, commanded the 121st Infantry Regiment when it captured the German town of Hurtgen during the Battle of Hurtgen Forest. Having risen to the rank of Colonel, he was appointed commanding officer of the 9th Infantry Regiment in 1945 and took part in the liberation of the Western part of Czechoslovakia. Ginder rose through the ranks to command the Thunderbirds in Korea. On February 11, 1953, General Taylor assumed command of the Eighth U.S. Army engaged in the Korean War's last round of fighting. In 1951, he married Jean Dalrymple, the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center and friend of Presidents and entertainment personalities.…

Black and white photographic illustration with text, lightly browned one small area, horizontal central fold. Good copy. 13.4 x 19.3cm. This leaflet was one of a large number of propaganda documents produced by China and North Korea during the Korean War. Part of a series of black-and-white propaganda leaflets which appear to have been produced by the Chinese People's Volunteers (the People's Republic of China forces supporting North Korea in the war) it aims to convey the message that American prisoners of war were well treated and were in regular communication with their families back home. The printed text assures readers that POWs held by North Korean and Chinese forces will be repatriated soon after the armistice is signed, whereas (warns the leaflet) Allied soldiers from the US, Britain and other nations "will have to stay in Korea until the US Government makes up its mind to leave Korea to the Koreans." The photograph purports to show Mrs Christine Brown, wife of Lt. Col, Gerald Brown reading a letter from her husband, who was a prisoner of war in Korea. Gerald Brown was in the US Air Force. He was shot down over Korea and spent almost 3 years as a prisoner of war. Lt. Col. Brown was in fact a Korean War POW who was later repatriated to the US, but the authenticity of the photo cannot be verified. The leaflets were generally distributed by plane or stuffed into artillery shells, though propaganda from the Northern side was also sometimes left in no man's land to be picked up by US and other forces fighting on the UN/South Korean side.…

Mirror with attached coloured image on paper under glass on reverse, 10.5 x 15cm, metal handle 15.5 x 17.5cm. Mirror a little stained and clouded at edges, image browned at edges, hanger rusty, but still very functional. An interesting piece of 1950s propaganda. This portable travel mirror is a useful and decorative example of the sort of mass produced consumer items made in the early 1950s in small local workshops that were organised into collectives. Travel mirrors could be hung up or propped up for use by a moveable handle. On the reverse is a colour socialist-realist illustration of a red flag-draped locomotive, a symbol of modern progress, patriotism and peace. The colourful image of the train with its ???? logo could be displayed when not in use or replaced with a photo, with the mirror behind it. In 1952 when China built its first domestically designed locomotive, it was called the "Peace" series, which we see written on the front of this engine with the image of a dove. China's involvement in the Korean War, to 'resist US aggression and assist Korea' depended on strong logistical supply lines to the front. Trains therefore became symbolic of national unity, strength, and China's ability to protect regional peace. Many such travel mirrors were bought as gifts and given as morale boosting items to the Chinese troops, who could insert family photographs under glass on the backs of their travel mirrors.…

Colour manuscript map of Korea, made in Puyang Middle School in 1954, 109 x 78cm, text in traditional Chinese characters, the map which was originally folded has been laid down on heavy gauge paper. Chipped in a number of areas at folds some recent colouring has modified the impact of this loss. While showing signs of use this map is an interesting example of classroom teaching material relating to Korea in 1950s China. The map depicts the principal geographical areas of Korea, Japan, and the People?s Republic of China. The 38th parallel is clearly marked, along with a number of important Korean cities, including Hanseong (Seoul), Kaesong, Busan, Jinju, Incheon, and Pyongyang, here written as ?? Korea is labelled as Chaoxian (??), the term commonly used in China at the time. Taken together with the naïve style of calligraphy and the note that it was produced at a middle school, Puyang Zhongxue (????) in Henan Province, shortly after the Korean War, it is likely that the map was made by a student, possibly named Guo Renwen (???), whose name appears at the lower right. The faint yellow numbers 1?5 painted on the map may refer to a legend or explanatory key that is no longer present. …

First edition, first printing, of this condemnation of American biological warfare in Asia, featuring pictorial evidence of infected insects and deadly bacteria viewed under a microscope. The usual sources record copies only at the International Institute of Social History and the National Library of Australia. Founded in 1945, the World Federation of Democratic Youth quickly came to be viewed by the CIA as a dangerously subversive left-wing group. During the Korean War, the WFDY was a receptive audience for Chinese allegations that America was using bacteriological weaponry. The present work reprints speeches and statements issued by the organization's senior officers, sessions of its constituent bodies, and a Stalin Prize winner. It also assembles qualitative and visual proof, including a table of "information on the dates and the places where infected insects were dropped in 15 points investigated". Octavo. First edition, first printing, scarce in commerce, of this propaganda pamphlet issued a few months before the publication of the controversial "Needham Report", an exposé of American biological warfare in Korea which drew on the explosive testimonies of Enoch, Quinn, and other POWs. Issued as a supplement to the magazine People's China in May 1952, this pamphlet contains the full confessions of Enoch and Quinn, a broadcast by Quinn, letters from Enoch to his family and to the Chinese 'volunteer' forces in Korea, and a state newspaper editorial warning that "the day of judgement of the American war criminals is near" (p. 15). Highly influential at the time, the statements of Enoch, Quinn, and others were subsequently recanted following their release. Their experiences in captivity are now considered an early example of "brainwashing", a term coined in 1950 by Edward Hunter to describe Chinese communist interrogation techniques. Approximately 250 vernacular snap shots of American military life in Korea, mostly infantry divisions, during the Cold War period in which the Soviet trained North Korean army invaded South Korea. There are many snap shot portraits of individual soldiers (including one of Korean troops), a few with a caption on verso, as well as daily life on the base, military material (tanks, airplanes), artillery practice, and local landscapes and towns. Specific sites pictured include the Camp Walker post exchange, Second Infantry Division NCO Academy, and a sign post in town showing the way to the Taegu Military post. The album closes with shots of the troops on their way home from Korea, stopping in Japan. With a newspaper article tipped in at rear, "5th Regimental Combat Team, Taegu Korea", on the departure of the 5th RCT from Pusan to the US. The 5th RCT deployed to Korea on 25 July 1950 to reinforce the Eighth Army in the shrinking area of United Nations control called the Pusan Perimeter. It reinforced the 25th Infantry Division, then the 1st Cavalry Division on the Naktong River line. Later it was attached to the 24th Infantry Division, replacing the 34th Infantry Regiment. It remained with the 24th Infantry Division until January 1952 when it officially became a separate RCT once more. The 5th RCT notably fought in the Battle of Pusan Perimeter, one of the first major battles in the Korean War, between United Nations and North Korean forces, which brought the southern advance of North Korean troops to a halt. The 5th RCT had 269 killed, 574 wounded and four captured during the battle Most snap shots measure 4 1/4 x 3 1/4"; some slightly smaller . The map is encircled by two UN flags, the national flags of twenty-two nations supporting UN Command either militarily or through medical support, as well as the insignia of combatant American units.…

Contemporary press photographs, various sizes, but most 8 x 10 inches [200 x 255 mm.] depicting scenes from Korea including from the front, and a single image of the signing of the peace treaty. Each photograph is captioned to verso with a roneoed slip and often with manuscript annotations; stamped with the copyright owner or news agency responsible. The original pen and ink cartoon by an unnamed artist depicts the scene on 'Hill 235' also known as Gloster Hill, where the Gloucester Regiment was entirely surrounded by Chinese forces in April 1951. Suffering heavy losses, hey eventually surrendered and 459 men were taken prisoner. Notes verso state that it was published DE [presumed to be Daily Express].…

Eight black and white photographs (20.5 x 25.5cm each), captioned in Japanese, the handmade album is titled and dated in ink, 23.5 x 32.8cm, [9]pp, cord ties. One photograph has been removed, card leaves and covers are browned, surface of upper cover abraded in places, some other minor wear but the photographs are in very good condition. A private album containing eight high-quality large-format photographs, showing US forces being welcomed to the northern Japanese city of Muroran, Hokkaido, on 25 April 1951 - at the height of the Korean War. The first two photos show the US forces being welcomed by a local brass band. There is then a shot of US officers and Japanese officials standing under a large sign saying "Welcome Thunderbirds - Muroran City", indicating that the troops being welcomed are from the 45th Infantry Division (nicknamed the Thunderbirds), one of two US Army National Guard units engaged in the Korean War, and recruited largely from the state of Oklahoma. The 45th Infantry Division received their initial training for combat in Korea in the US itself in 1950, and then sailed from New Orleans to Japan in early 1951, arriving at the ports of Otaru and Muroran in Hokkaido April of that year. From there they were sent for further training at Camp Crawford, a US military base on the outskirts of the city of Sapporo and at a newly created camp south of Chitose, before being transfered to Korea in December 1951. The album also contains two photos of the ships "General C.G. Morton" and "General William Weigel", which were built during World War II and used as a troop transport ship during the Korean War, and were presumably among the ships which brought the 45th Infantry Division to Japan. Other images show local officials explaining the geography of the region to US officers, as they peruse a large map, and a Japanese woman beign presented with a badge by an American officer. Muroran was one of many Japanese ports whose life was transformed by the mass arrival of UN (mostly American) forces during the Korean War, although the town's role in the war is less well documented than the roles of ports like Yokohama, Kobe and Sasebo. These pictures give a vivid impression of the Korean war journeys of US troops and of Hokkaido during the Korean War.…

First edition in English, first printing, scarce in commerce, of the so-called "Needham Report", an explosive exposé of American biological warfare in Korea compiled by the International Scientific Commission, a team of scientists including the British biochemist and Cambridge don Joseph Needham. In March 1952, Needham and his colleagues were invited by the Soviet-backed World Peace Council to undertake an impartial investigation into Washington's conduct in the Korean theatre. The final publication, released on 31 August 1952, was immediately divisive - lauded by the Communist bloc and dismissed by the United States for its "pseudo-scientific paraphernalia. skilfully designed to impress" (Defence Research Board, quoted in Avery, unpaginated). Needham was blacklisted in Western academia, although the report's findings came to seem increasingly credible. Bertrand Russell, originally a sceptic, later wrote in his 1969 autobiography that, given developments in Vietnam, "I owe Professor Needham and others my sincere apologies for thinking these charges too extreme". In addition to the report, Needham (1900-1995) is most well known for his monumental Science and Civilisation in China, a defining contribution to the study of the history of science. Donald H. Three rare textile handicrafts proclaiming grassroots support for Mao's first war after coming to power. Household production of everyday items with political messages demonstrated both China's self-sufficiency and reduced demands on the country's still-fragile manufacturing sector. The campaign to condemn American aggression in Korea and support the Chinese People's Volunteer Army was the first mass campaign in the People's Republic of China. A steady program of activities fostered patriotism, consolidated the regime, and sent a defiant message to Beijing's enemies in Taipei and Washington. This is a powerful Italian anti-Communist Cold War propaganda poster printed c. 1953 by Gros-Monti. Referencing the Korean War, the poster emphasizes the Communist threat to (Western) Europe and the specter of a Korean-style conflict on the continent. It was most likely intended to bolster anti-Communist political parties in the run-up to Italy's 1953 general election. A Closer Look This haunting poster presents a map of Europe and the Near East, centered roughly on Italy. At right, a skeleton's arm labeled 'Korea' holds a tattered Communist banner. At the bottom, in large letters, is the phrase 'Their Peace.' Although undated, the poster was likely produced during the long Korean War armistice negotiations (July 1951 - July 1953). As the armistice negotiations were concluding, Italy held its first general election in five years (discussed below), and this poster was mostly likely issued at this time to support the Christian Democrats and other anti-Communist parties. Korea and the Risk of a European War As the Second World War drew to a close and early tensions began to arise between the wartime Allies, considerable effort was made, particularly with the July - August 1945 Potsdam Conference, to jockey for position but also avoid a situation that could lead to another war in the future; the Soviets and Europeans were exhausted by the war against Germany and Stalin was confident that a confrontation with capitalism could wait until the Soviets had recovered. The division of Germany into occupation zones and the shifting of borders in Eastern Europe were the major agenda items at Potsdam. However, some attention was given to the ongoing war in Asia, which the Soviets pledged to join three months after the conclusion of the war in Europe on August 9. Wartime discussions on the future of Korea were scant, and the lightning Soviet advance through Manchuria upon entering the Pacific War concerned Washington D.C. This reality led to a proposal for the division of the peninsula into occupation zones being rapidly prepared and presented to the Soviets, who unexpectedly accepted it without complaint. (The Soviets were, in fact, incapable of and uninterested in keeping a large occupation force in Korea, unlike they were Eastern European countries.) In the following months, as tensions between the Soviet Union and the West mounted, both Korea and Germany drifted towards political division along the lines of the occupation zones. While Europe remained the primary area of concern for both the Soviets and Americans, other parts of the world became proxies for the developing global rivalry. It was the misfortune of Korea to become the first intense 'hot' war of the Cold War, which left the country divided and devastated. Following a very dynamic situation in the first year of the war - with the North Koreans making rapid gains in the south, then being counter-attacked by the U.S.-led United Nations forces, then China entering the war and successfully counter-attacking the American and South Korean troops - by the summer of 1951 the war had settled into a stalemate around the original dividing line at the 38th parallel north. Armistice negotiations began in July 1951 but dragged on for months and months as neither side wanted to end the war without at least recovering their full pre-war territory. The war ground down the major outside powers engaged, the U.S. and the People's Republic of China, and became a major political liability for President Harry Truman. It is often assumed that Stalin also hoped to drag the war out to distract the U.S. from other theaters, particularly Europe; there is little direct evidence of this (Stalin generally kept his strategic calculations to himself), and Stalin was primarily concerned for the moment with avoiding the outbreak of a wider war. A rare example of Cold War cartographic propaganda, this c. 1950 Hungarian-language map of Korea was prepared by the Magyar Rend?r Melléklete (Hungarian Police Annex). Meant for public display and interactive coordination with news about the progress of the conflict, it extols the Korean people's struggle for 'freedom' against American 'imperialism.' A Closer Look This Hungarian-language map covers the entire Korean Peninsula (displayed as undivided, as in North Korean propaganda) along with portions of Manchuria, the Soviet Union, and Japan. Cities, towns, rail lines, provincial and national boundaries, and topographic features such as rivers are labeled throughout. The text at the top admonishes the 'warmongers' (i.e., America) and tells them to keep their 'hands off Korea.' The text at the bottom explains that the map should be publicly displayed, after which it would be turned into a sort of game where readers could track the progress of 'the freedom struggle of the Korean people' (i.e., the Korean People's Army) with small flags as they inevitably marched towards the south. It was very likely meant to be tied in with the propaganda and fundraising campaign discussed below. Hungary's Role in the Korean War Like other countries in Eastern Europe that had recently been occupied by the Soviets and fallen under Communist or Soviet-aligned governments, the Hungarian People's Republic was staunchly in support of North Korea during the Korean War, though its ability to offer material support was limited. Aside from propaganda support such as the present map, Hungary's most direct contribution to the North Koreans consisted of seven medical teams, eventually totaling over 200 doctors, nurses, and other personnel, who, between 1950 and 1957, worked in a hospital near Pyongyang (for most of this period called Rákosi Mátyás Hospital, also known as the 58th Hospital of the Korean People's Army). These personnel were not frontline military medics, though they often treated wounded soldiers and civilian victims of such aerial bombings (which were frequent and intense in Pyongyang). Moreover, they provided general medical services for the civilian population of North Korea and trained Korean medical professionals. The medical mission was perhaps more important for the new Hungarian government than the North Koreans; a fundraising drive and propaganda campaign reinforced messages of international Socialist solidarity and 'anti-imperialism,' echoing the Hungarian Working People's Party (later the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party) own domestic propaganda and signaling the 'party line' under the rule of Mátyás Rákosi, who the previous year (1949) had moved the country towards a totalitarian dictatorship on the Stalinist model. Publication History and Census This map was prepared by the Magyar Rend?r Melléklete (Hungarian Police Annex). It is undated but likely was produced in the early phase of the conflict in 1950. We have not been able to locate another example of this map. However, the OCLC (909015096) does note two examples, held in Hungary, of a short book of the same title written by female journalist Júlia Kenyeres (1895 - 1958), published by Szikra (Spark), the newspaper of the SZIT (Trade Union Youth Worker and Apprentice Movement). It is unclear if a version of this map also appeared in that work, but the present map looks to be unlikely to have come from Kenyeres' book given its ephemeral nature, having been printed on newsprint. …
