Rare first edition of the monograph on the life and work of the Viennese Art Nouveau architect Otto Wagner. The author of the book, Hideto Kishida, undertook numerous trips to Europe shortly after completing his architectural studies in order to study the architecture of library buildings, as he was to be involved in the redesign of the university library as part of the new planning of Tokyo University (after the Kantô earthquake in 1923). On the basis of these studies, Kishida published several books on European architecture, such as this discussion of Otto Wagner. In the 1940s, he was also to deal with the neoclassicism of National Socialist architecture. But Le Corbusier, whose series "L'Esprit Nouveau" he brought with him to Japan, was equally the subject of his studies. In 1936, Kishida headed the commission that selected the design for the Japanese pavilion at the World Exhibition in Paris. (Cf.
