Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine dj. Illustrated by (dj) I.G. Haupt (illustrator). First Edition. [beautiful copy, tight and clean, no discernible wear at all to the book; the jacket has just a bit of wear at the base of the spine and a couple of small tears + associated creasing at the upper left corner of the rear panel]. "A dramatic love story laid against the drab background of a travelling man's hotel in a small midwestern town." The plot concerns a cabaret singer who, after being jilted (in favor of the boss's daughter) by her traveling salesman boyfriend, turns to the Salvation Army for solace; then she meets up with the boyfriend again, and complications ensue. Adapted for the 1931 MGM film LAUGHING SINNERS, with Joan Crawford, Neil Hamilton and a young Clark Gable; it was one of a full dozen movies that Gable appeared in that year (three of which starred Crawford). The part of the singer was played in the original Broadway production by Mayo Methot (who later gained some notoriety as the famously contentious Mrs. Humphrey Bogart #3), and was described by The New York Times as "an unpretentious play with a fine, lingering aroma." (The dust jacket illustration for this book had also been used for the front cover illustration of the Dec. 14, 1929 issue of The New Yorker -- a fact which I discovered entirely by accident, and which now has me wondering if this sort of thing happened often.).

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Two Weeks Off' is a spirited and charming three-act comedy that captures the social nuances and leisure culture of the late 1920s. Written by the noted playwright Kenyon Nicholson in collaboration with Thomas Barrows, the work centers on the quintessential American experience of the annual summer holiday. The narrative follows a diverse group of characters as they escape their daily routines for a fortnight of relaxation, only to find themselves entangled in a series of humorous misunderstandings, romantic pursuits, and the inevitable social frictions that arise in a holiday setting. With a keen ear for contemporary dialogue and a sharp eye for character, the authors provide a vivid portrait of middle-class aspirations and anxieties during a period of significant cultural energy. Nicholson, celebrated for his realistic and often gritty depictions of American life, here leans into a lighter, observational style that highlights the foibles and charms of his protagonists. 'Two Weeks Off' remains a significant example of early 20th-century American stagecraft, offering a nostalgic yet insightful look at the universal desire for reinvention and the complexities of human interaction when the constraints of work are temporarily removed. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The Barker: A Play of Carnival Life in Three Acts' is a vivid portrayal of the gritty and vibrant world of the traveling American carnival in the early 20th century. Written by Kenyon Nicholson, this three-act drama explores the complex lives of those who inhabit the sideshow, centering on the titular 'barker' whose job is to entice the public into the tents with promises of wonder and excitement. The play delves into themes of family loyalty, professional pride, and the clash between the itinerant lifestyle of the 'carny' and the expectations of conventional society. With its authentic dialogue and atmospheric setting, the work captures the unique subculture of the carnival, complete with its internal hierarchies, romantic entanglements, and the relentless pressure of life on the road. A significant piece of American theatrical history, 'The Barker' offers a compelling look at a bygone era of entertainment, highlighting the humanity behind the spectacle and the illusions of the midway. It remains a classic example of character-driven drama that examines the sacrifices made for the sake of the show. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
