First UK edition. 320pp. This is the book of a man who, despite all his points of contact with the life of the scholar, was in part a cast endowed with the instincts of the hobo. And, restraining all other instincts, he has set down that phase of his life alone. He begins his book at the same moment that he begins his life as a tramp, and ends at the same moment that this life comes to an end. The story begins in Chicago on the night that Mullin, in the company of a tramp named Frisco, rode his first "blind" out of the station yards on a New York Central flier. It ends, four months later, when at dawn, riding the "decks" of the Banner Express, he came from St. Louis back to Chicago to take leave of the smoky trail. The interval between the two is a rough circling of every part of the country except the Far West. Riding every part of a train from above the coaches to beneath them, learning almost every trick of the trade, authenticating his hobo man- from that of a "gay cat," or apprentice tramp, to that of a dyed-in-the-wool gentleman of the road, he led a life of the greatest variety and action conceivable. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine (the author's name on the spine has been spelt 'Mullen' rather than 'Mullin'). The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling to the boards. There is some rubbing to the spine edges and the spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the free endpapers and a small patch of damage to the front free endpaper where a short name or price has been partly erased.
