The handbook on Sea Shore Animals of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is an attempt to provide an up to date information on sea shore animals from sponges to mammals. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are comparable to those of the famous Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean. They have unique fauna and are very important zoogeographically. The available information clearly indicates the diversity richness and individuality of the sea shore faunal wealth of these islands and the virgin natural beauty of these islands makes many a naturalist and tourist very much enthusiastic to have a glimpse of the animal life these islands. The book covers information on some groups such as Porifera Coelenterata Polychaeta Crustacea Mollusca Echinodermata Pisces Reptilia Aves Mammalia etc. which are discussed in brief. It is hoped that this book will help in furthering interest in these fascinating magnificent islands amongst students of zoology naturalists and tourists from India as well as abroad. The book has a number of colourful illustrations so as to give a visual appeal and to provide interesting reading. (jacket) 188 pp.

Subject index. Over exploitation and degradation of natural resources is one of the major weaknesses that the present agriculture faces. The soil resource is also under increasing stress as there is a big gap (deficit of about 10 million tonnes NPK nutrients) between annual drain of nutrients from the soil due to crop removals and the nutrient inputs from the external sources. Integrated nutrient management (INM) has been recognized as the economically viable and environmentally benign technology to enhance soil productivity through the balanced use of mineral fertilizers combined with organic sources of plant nutrients. One of the major constraints of INM is the quantity and quality of organic manures available with the farmers. Even though significant quantities of organic manures are available with the farmers, their quality is poor. Lot of research has been done in ICAR Institutes as well as SAUs to enhance the quality of manures by efficient composting techniques, besides developing efficient techniques for nutrient enrichment in different organic manures including municipal solid wastes for efficient recycling of organic wastes for sustainable agriculture. This book contains very useful information on various on-farm and off-farm organic wastes being used for soil fertility management in INM and organic farming, nutrient enriched composts preparation, use of vermicomposting techniques for bio-degradation of organic wastes, conservation agriculture, and the effect of organic wastes on crop and soils quality, soil carbon dynamics. This publication will be quiet useful to researchers, students, extension persons, policy makers and all those engaged in developing efficient nutrient management strategies for sustainable agriculture. Use of simulation models to assess the impact of climate change on agro-ecosystems/M. Mohanty and Nishant K. Sinha. Index. This book addresses the important issues of food security and sustainability of natural resources of India in the context of the projected climate change. Agro-ecosystems being the sites of intense interaction between human beings and natural world, global climate change is likely to affect the resource base, the crop productivity, input use efficiency and overall the profitability of agricultural production systems to a great extent. However, the adverse effects of climate change can be alleviated through mitigation and adaptation strategies which carry importance due to the increasing population and food demand in India. Thus, this compilation covers possible sources and sinks of greenhouse gases in Indian context including the potentials of soil carbon sequestration, crop pest and soil management and scientific livestock management as mitigation and adaptation options. This book also includes some topics on fundamentals of green house effect and the possible mechanisms by which soil nutrient availability alters due to CO2 fertilization. The schematic diagrams, tables and graphs have been included to make the book more illustrative. The likelihood of carbon credits and trading through best management practices can help Indian farmers earning carbon credits in future. The book is useful for researchers, farm managers, policy makers and also students engaged in climate change related studies.

Disaster preparedness in India with special reference to Andhra Pradesh/P. Jaya Lakshmi. Index. Natural disasters cannot be prevented but their effort can usually be mitigated by an effective disaster management policy. Disaster management means a planned and systematic approach towards understanding and solving problems in the wake of disasters. The disaster plans lines measures to minimize human and economic losses from disasters and to facilitate effective rescue relief rehabilitation and reconstruction. The disaster plan spells out what is to be done before during and after a disaster by whom when and how. By anticipating these extraordinary events and acting to minimize their effects a plan helps to rescue the continuity of growth and development. Practical experiences has proved beyond doubt the commitment of recourses to disaster effectiveness compared to sinking of resources in an adhoc way in rescue and rehabilitation. In fact timely prediction and warning systems in coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and building cyclone shelters have contributed to dramatic reduction of loss of life. Combination of structural and non structural measures has shown to alleviate the effects of cyclones floods droughts and earthquakes. 282 pp.

Somani, F.M. Qureshi, U.S. Rawat and S.L. Mundra. Subject Index. The continuous use of high levels of chemical fertilizers is adversely affecting the sustainability of agricultural production and causing environmental pollution. There is a decline in the productivity of crops, despite the application of optimum levels of fertilizer inputs under assured irrigation. Constraint analysing has identified the declining organic mater status as a probable reason. It is in this context that the supplementation of organic along with chemical fertilizers is a decisive viable strategy. In coming decades a major issue in designing sustainable agriculture system will be the management of soil organic matter and the rational use of inorganic inputs along with animal manures, crop residues, green manures, sewage sludge and food industry wastes. However, since organic wastes cannot meet the total nutrient needs of modern agriculture, integrated use of nutrients from fertilizers and organic wastes seems to be a need of the time. Sustainable plant nutrition to increase food production has been identified as one of the priorities directly linked to land and water management resources in relation to environment. Therefore, the soil health is very important to achieve national food security targets for sustainable growth. Indian agriculture is operating at a net negative balance of plant nutrients at the rate of 8-10 million tonnes/annum. At least 10 million tonnes nutrients should come from organic manures crop residues and bio-degradable wastes. Thus, food security is very much linked with nutrient input. India is endowed with enormous potential for plant nutrients locked up in the bio-degradable wastes. A total quantity of around 875 million tones of these so-called waste material is available in the country, which can supply 18.45 million tones of nutrients annually. This book orients towards recycling of biodegradable organic wastes for improved soil productivity. (jacket).
