Joliet; New York; Boston: The P. F. Volland Company, (1926). Eleventh edition. 12mo - 7-7/16" x 6". Vintage reference photograph from the 1924 film, showing actor Gibson Gowland in character as McTeague. Printed mimeo snipe affixed to the verso. From the archive of film historian and author Joel Finler. Based on the 1899 novel "McTeague" by Frank Norris. An impoverished miner-turned-dentist wins the lottery, but the ensuing fo…rtune threatens to ruin the lives of everyone it touches. Director Erich von Stroheim's masterpiece, one of the first films to be shot entirely on location, in San Francisco and Death Valley, using (what were then considered) sophisticated and relatively new filming techniques, such as montage editing and deep focus. Stroheim's first cut of the film was a mammoth, 9.5 hour presentation, edited down to two and a half hours against his wishes. All that survives today is a restored, slightly choppy but coherent 240-minute version, supplanted with still photographs, that conveys to the viewer the unimaginable grandeur of the original. 7.5 x 9.75 inches. Very Good plus, with brief wear along the bottom edge and a small toned spot near the bottom left corner. National Film Registry. Ebert I. Godard, Histoire(s) du cinema. Rosenbaum 1000.

Vintage photograph of the cast of the 1924 film in front of a railroad box car containing numerous cans of the uncut film. The photograph is mounted to a thin piece of contemporary cardboard with a contemporary ink annotation beneath the photograph reading: "Shipping negative to NY to be cut on way since Stroheim made all kinds…of threats = regarding editing of picture in studio." Unique, and impressive as a period artifact where the annotation corresponds precisely to the visual content, right down to the film canisters and the absence of Von Stroheim. With some reservation we believe we have identified the majority of the individuals in the photograph as: (L to R) Jack McDonald, James F. Fulton, Frank Hayes, Joan Standing, Lon Poff, Zasu Pitts, unidentified, William Barlow, Dale Fuller, and Jean Hersholt, with the last three individuals unidentified. Based on the 1899 novel "McTeague" by Frank Norris. An impoverished miner-turned-dentist wins the lottery, but the ensuing fortune threatens to ruin the lives of everyone it touches. Director Erich von Stroheim's masterpiece, one of the first films to be shot entirely on location, in San Francisco and Death Valley, using sophisticated and relatively new filming techniques, such as montage editing and deep focus. All that survives today is a restored, slightly choppy but coherent 240-minute version, supplanted with still photographs, that conveys to the viewer the unimaginable grandeur of the original. Approximately 9.75 x 5.5 inches mounted to a 9.75 x 7 inch thin piece of cardboard. Good to Very Good, with some loss at the top left corner, trimming to the margins, and four closed tears along the top edge. National Film Registry. Ebert I. Godard, Histoire(s) du cinema. Rosenbaum 1000.
