He introduces the first three through an examination of the relationship between the prohibitions listed in the biblical text, and the fourth through a study of the biblical depiction of the war against idols before and after the fall of the Northern Kingdom. Judge argues that texts depicting the era before the fall provide a context in which there are strong grounds to distinguishing the worship of the 'wrong gods' and the worship of the right God in the wrong way. Good. - The autographs of 4 significant figures in 19th Century legal and legislative circles penned on 7 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide wove paper removed from a guest book and mounted on a sheet clipped from an autograph album. The page is signed "Arturo de Marcoartu / deputy to the Cortes" by the Spanish pacifist, engineer and senator who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Price. Goronosuke Yoshiyama, the first Japanese national to be called to the English Bar, signs himself "Yoshiyama Goronosuke / Japan". Next are those of the British Barrister signed "Thomas Webster / Temple" and the English financial administrator and railroad executive William Lawrence Banks, signed "Wm. L. Banks". Mounted on the verso of the sheet is the address portion of a postmarked envelope addressed to Mary, Duchess of Gloucester with its red wax seal. The autograph sheet, removed from a guest book, is soiled with a few tiny tears at the edges and a crease to the bottom right corner. Very good.RARE.The first Japanese national to be called to the English Bar, Goronosuke Yoshiyama (c.1846-1882) was called to the Bar on June 6, 1871 and admitted to Lincoln's Inn on November 11, 1871. Funded by the Japanese government, he had arrived in England in 1868 to study English law and its constitution. Unable to become a member of Cambridge University due to his lack of knowledge of Latin and Greek, he stayed to attend lectures on international and English law and constitutional history. Determined to succeed, Yoshiyama hired as a tutor Thomas Waraker, a member of Lincoln's Inn who lectured on law at Trinity Hall. He returned to Japan to become head of foreign affairs at the Ministry of Justice and subsequently transferred to Osaka as a judge, presiding over 251 cases in 3 years. Yoshiyama concluded his career as a judge in Japan's Supreme Court of Judicature, dying at the young age of 36 in 1882.The XII Lord of the House of Marcoartu, Arturo de Marcoartu (1829-1904) was a Spanish pacifist, engineer and Senator. Signed above as a "Deputy to the Cortes" (the Cortes Generales being the Spanish Parliament), he utilized his connections within the British legal network to lobby for a unified international system of justice. Involved in the international arbitration and peace movement in London in the 1870's, he frequently interacted with the legal minds of Lincoln's Inn where both Yoshiyama & Webster practiced. De Marcoartu was the first Spanish Nominee for a Nobel Prize, the Nobel Peace Prize in his case.The English barrister Thomas Webster (1810-1875) was known for his involvement in patent legislation. He became secretary to the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1837, resigning in 1839 though remaining as the institution's honorary secretary until he was called to the Bat at Lincoln's Inn in 1841. Webster played a major role in reforming patent law through the Patent Law Amendment Act of 1852. A member of the governing body of the Society of Arts, he was chairman at the meeting of the Society when the proposal of holding the Internnational Exhibition of 1851 was made. Webster was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1865.The English financial administrator, railroad executive and legal figure William Lawrence Banks worked closely with public committees and international delegates in London.…
